Govt To Produce 8 Million Plantain Suckers For Cocoa Farmers Under Cocoa Rehabilitation Program In Ahafo Region

The Government of Ghana has begun the distribution of 8 million plantain suckers to cocoa farmers under the cocoa rehabilitation program in Ahafo Region.

The suckers are for free.

The Ahafo Regional Minister, Hon George Boakye made these known after visiting the plantain nursery site at Noberkaw in Asunafo South District of Ahafo Region said two contractors KUMAD Global Impact and Afarinick Plantain Nursery Company have started the distribution.

The cocoa rehabilitation project is aimed at replacing the cutting of affected cocoa trees by the swollen shoot disease with plantain suckers for a period of three years to cater for the economic livelihoods of farmers and also provide shade for the growing of Cocoa.

The Site Manager of KUMAD Global Impact, Mr. Joseph Danquah said so far over 4.5 million plantain suckers have been distributed while 1.2 suckers are ready for distribution.

Mr. Joseph Danquah added that the project has so far employed over 600 youth in the area.
