Lead Poisoning A Major Problem Facing Children - Pure Earth Ghana

Lead poisoning has become a major problem around the globe, especially in Ghana, which has affected the good health of so many children in the country.

A report named “The Toxic Truth” jointly released by Pure Earth and UNICEF, brings to light the severity of this issue in Ghana, with alarming findings that demand urgent attention and action.

The report states that up to 800 million children worldwide, equivalent to one-third of all children, have blood lead levels at or above five micrograms per deciliter (ug/dL), the level that requires immediate action.

The Country Director for Pure Earth Ghana, Mr. Esmond Wisdom Quansah, stated that a lot of children in Ghana have high blood lead levels, which is serious and requires attention to be resolved, and the consequences of lead poisoning in Ghana have been devastating.

He also said that lead poisoning can affect the central nervous system, leading to developmental delays, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems in children.

Mr. Esmond Wisdom Quansah also added that lead poisoning is much greater in children than in adults.

He therefore urged the government and all stakeholders to join Pure Earth Ghana as they tackle the prevention of lead poisoning in children.

He spoke to Peace FM during the commemoration of International Lead Poison Prevention Week 2023.
