SONA 2024: Severe Tension Engulfs West Africa - Akufo Addo

President of Ghana, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo has revealed that there is severe tension in the West African sub region.

In his last State of the Nation address on Tuesday, february 27, President Akufo Addo acknowlegded the political instability in West Africa following the recent military junta in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger. these four West African countrie experienced the overthrow of democratically elected governments.

''There is indeed, Mr. Speaker, a state of palpable anxiety and tension in every corner of west Africa, raising the spectre of regional instability, which we thought had been banished. Unconstitutional changes in Government in parts of Africa, especially in West Africa, through a series of coup d'etats and military interventions in governance.''

President Akufo Addo underscored the grave effect of such military invasion tend to have on democracy and the economic fortunes of the sub region. According to President Akufo, such unfortunate incidents results in democratic regression in the region. 

In addressing the way forward, President Akufo revealed that, it is in the best interest of all Africans that such situations are addressed immediately, hence, Ghana's support to the Economic Community of west African States (ECOWAS) in finding lasting solutions to the occurencies. 

''It is in the interest of democratic griowth that this development is reversed as soon as possible, and we, in Ghana, continue to give maximum support to ECOWAS, the regional body of West Africa, and the African Union, Africa's Continental organisation, in their efforts to restore democratic institutions in the affected nations''. 

President Akufo Addo reiterated the need to help stem the tide of the unwelcome evolution that has engulfed some African countries. 

In the past three years, the West African sub region has not had the best of news as far as democratic governance is concerned. Mali, Niger, Guniea and Burkina Faso had the military invade their governance system. In the quest to bring situations under control, ECOWAS issued sanctions on the four West African Countries.
