Goldfields Ghana Presents $20m To Government

Gold Fields Ghana, operators of the Tarkwa and Damang mines in the Western Region of Ghana has presented a cheque for US$20million as interim dividend to the Minister of Finance & Economic Planning. The acting Executive Vice President of Gold Fields West Africa Region, Mr. Alfred Baku made the presentation to the Minister of Finance, Hon. Kwabena Duffuor at a brief ceremony in the Minister�s office in Accra. The 2011 interim dividend payment amounts to $18million in respect of the Tarkwa mine, and US$2million (two million US Dollars) in respect of the Damang mine. The Damang mine also paid its final dividend against 2010 of $3million in February this year. Altogether, the two operations would have paid US$23million to the government of Ghana as dividend this year. In making the presentation, Mr. Baku remarked that Gold Fields was proud of its contribution to Government�s revenue. �We are delighted to be contributing significantly to the national development agenda. We would like to assure government that as partners in development, we will continue to grow shareholder value, engage with our stakeholders, and remain committed to improving the quality of life in our operating environment�. �Gold Fields Ghana continues to pursue an aggressive growth strategy. Our operations are robust and well positioned to deliver on the group�s objectives and the Tarkwa and Damang mines will remain as key operations in the strategic plan�, Mr. Baku concluded. The Minister of Finance in his response congratulated Gold Fields Ghana on their consistent excellent performance in their operations, added that, the Government of Ghana is happy with the good work Gold Fields Ghana is doing in the country. On the issue of illegal mining on Gold Fields� properties both in Tarkwa and Damang, the Minister promised to engage the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to help curb the activities of the illegal miners. The minister assured to sign the stability agreement of Gold Fields Ghana and also visit their mining sites. At the Ghana Club 100 Awards nite held on Thursday, Gold Fields was adjudged the Sector Leader in the mining industry; the highest tax payer in Ghana; best company in Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development and number 9 Ghana�s leading company. Present at the ceremony include: Fiifi Kwetey, a Deputy Minister of Finance, Mrs. Pamela Djamson-Tettey, Director of Corporate Affairs & Sustainable Development of Gold Fields West Africa; Mr. Martin Ahorney, Finance Manager and other Directors of the Ministry of Finance.
