World Bank Cautions Ghana On $3bn Loan

The World Bank has expressed confidence in Ghanas economic growth path, but has cautioned that the 3 billion Chinese loan facility being pursued by government should necessarily be used for the projects identified. Vice President of the World Bank in charge of Africa, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili, made this known when she paid a courtesy call on President Mills in New York. President Mills is in New York attending the 66th session of the UN General Assembly. Briefing the press after the meeting, Director of Communications at the Presidency, Koku Anyidoho indicated that President Mills pressed home the importance of the loan to the admiration of Mrs. Ezekwesili, who in turn pledged her support. The 3 billion loan facility has been a source of heated debate in Ghana. The opposition NPP opposed the deal complaining about the implications of the facility. Reports also indicate that the IMF has kicked against the loan deal which was recently approved in parliament. However, Koku Anyidoho says the World Bank is happy about the infrastructural developments identified by the government for which the 3 billion loan facility would be used for.
