GIPC Targets $1.5b Investment Inflows

The Ghana investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) has said its target for end of year investments into the country is 1. 5 billion dollars. Chief Executive Officer of the GIPC, Mr George Aboagye, has indicated that out of the targeted amount, it is the expectation of the Centre that non oil investments from the United States of America will total over 30 million dollars. According to him, the conservative estimates were likely to be exceeded if current trends noticed by the growth of investments into the country continued. So far the investment inflow into Ghana has been very commendable. By half year 2011 we have been able to attract almost 600 million dollars into the country Mr Aboagye said. He indicated that the figures put against what pertained in 2009 showed a remarkable increase in investment flows into the country-a situation he described as very encouraging but insisted that more needed to be done to ensure that more jobs are created by such investments when they come in. Touching on investments from the United States of America, George Aboagye indicated that the prospects are bright indicating that investments from the USA devoid of oil sector investments have been growing steadily hence the optimism that by close of year, the figure would be much encouraging. The GIPC had been involved in promoting and encouraging investments into the country and Mr Aboagye, after attending a meeting of businessmen of the United States of America on the sidelines of the UN conference said Ghana will waste no time in taking advantage of the interest shown in Ghana. He was particularly enthused at the help and interest shown by the state department of the US towards pushing Ghana into the American market. Meanwhile, the GIPC is looking at establishing a permanent investment centre in the United States to help promote investments vigorously from the USA to Ghana. What the figures show is that whereas in 2009 investments other than oil from the US were not even 9 million dollars by 2010 we had achieved investments of around 18 million dollars and by 2011, half year, we had achieved 20 million dollars-an indication that the trend is upward. By the end of 2011 Im sure we will get around 30 million dollars on non oil investments into Ghana from the USA Mr Aboagye indicated. He said the GIPC is putting in place measures to ensure that Ghana remained competitive in the global investment world so as to attract the needed attention from investors.
