Newmont Selected for Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for Fifth Straight Year

The first gold mining company selected to the Dow Jones Sustainable World Index, Newmont Mining Corporation, the parent company of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, has achieved yet another milestone, becoming the only gold mining company to be selected for inclusion in the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for five consecutive years (DJSI World) (www.sustainability-index.com). The DJSI World includes approximately 300 global companies identified as leaders in the areas of sustainability, economic, environmental and social performance. In 2007, Newmont became the first gold company included in the DJSI World and has maintained inclusion on the DJSI North America Index since 2006. In March, Newmont Mining Corporation was also ranked in the top 50 on Corporate Responsibility (CR) Magazines 100 Best Corporate Citizens List. Thanks to the efforts of Newmont Ghanas employees and those from other Newmont operations around the globe, we can all be proud of this acknowledgment of Newmont's environmental and social performance, said Dave Schummer, Regional Senior Vice President for Africa Operations. Im pleased that, once again, their commitment to our values is being recognized by such a prestigious, independent organization." The Dow Jones Sustainability World Index is composed of global sustainability leaders and represents the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies based on long-term economic, environmental and social criteria. Newmont Ghanas Ahafo Linkages Program, which seeks to integrate local supply content into the companys business, last year won the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply UKs (CIPS) 2010 Best Procurement Community and Best Supplier Diversity Project Awards whiles the Program manager, George Brakoh, was named the Best Procurement Male Professional of the Year 2010 for Africa. The Ahafo Linkages Program focuses on building the capacity of local businesses, ensuring the development of a diversified economy outside the mine and sustainably improving the environment for local business development and long term survival. Newmont Ghana has recently been voted as a leading company in the fight against HIV/AIDS and Malaria prevention. Its Workplace HIV/AIDS and Malaria won the best Workplace HIV/AIDS and Malaria Programme award of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC). Our social and environmental performance at our Ahafo Mine and Akyem Project and similar efforts by Newmonts other global operations have collectively qualified Newmont for its fifth consecutive inclusion in this sought after World Index, said Mr. Schummer. Newmont Ghana is committed to high environmental practices, safety measures, and social responsibility as the company strives to be the most valued and respected mining company through industry leading performance.
