Ghana Qualifies For Afcon Finals With 100% Winning Record

Serbian coach Goran Stevanovic qualified Ghana for the 2012 Nations Cup finals with a 100 percent winning record. The 44-year-old won all of his four matches in Group I since his appointment as Ghana coach in January this year. He began with a 3-0 win over Congo, Brazzaville in March before thrashing the Red Devils 3-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium in the return encounter in June. Stevanovic then masterminded a nondescript 2-0 win over Swaziland in Accra last month. His attacking brand of football saw the Black Stars score ten goals and conceded only one in four matches. He came under intense attack for dropping goalkeeper Richard Kingson and Olympique Marseille talisman Andre Ayew. But his sides goodish display which dispatched Sudan 2-0 in the last qualifier this Saturday played in Omdurman, will earn him some respect from his critics. The former Partizan Belgrade is now set to lead Ghana to a fifth continental silverware at next years finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. WHO WILL BE THERE.... Ghana will make a 19th Africa Cup of Nations appearance at next years finals to be co-hosted by Gabon/Equatorial Guinea. Seven-time winners Egypt (22) and Ivory Cost (19) are the countries to have made more appearances than Ghana. The Black Stars completed the qualifiers unbeaten and amassed 16 points after beating closet challengers Sudan 2-0 on final day of the qualifiers. Ghana have won the continental championship on four occasions and could be in line for fifth silverware in 2012. With defending champions Egypt, Cameroon and Nigeria all failing to qualify, the Black Stars will be huge favourites to win the crown. The 2010 Fifa World Cup quarter-finalists missed out narrowly at the last edition in Angola two years ago losing 1-0 to the Pharaohs of Egypt. Ghana will know their Group opponents on 25 October when the draw takes place in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea.
