Average Ghanaian Can Live Up To 64 Years - Report

Life expectancy in Ghana has increased by 11 years, meaning that Ghanaians can live on average up to 64. 2 years, according to the United Nations Human Development Index released in Accra on Thursday. The report revealed that Ghana has moved up appreciably in this years Index, gaining five places and placing 135th out of 187 countries considered. The Anglo-Africa Launch of the Global Human Development Report 2011 was performed by Vice President John Mahama. Delivering her address prior to the launch, a UN under Secretary General, Ms Rebecca Grynspan lauded Ghanas efforts, but advised that more is needed to be done to improve. This years report focused on the challenge of sustainable and equitable progress. Justifying why Ghana was chosen for the launch of this years report, Ms Grynspan said, we have made a point of launching the report here in Ghana both to highlight the importance of its findings for Africa and also to bring attention to Ghanas recent impressive human development progress. Over the last five years, Ghana has climbed five spots in the Human Development Index Rankings, reflecting that Ghanaians on average live longer, are more prosperous and are better educated and this progress has been faster than in any other country, she added. So to increase 11 years since 1980 in life expectancy is really an achievement. Launching the report, Vice President Mahama indicated that the government will still maintain the momentum in policies aimed at improving livelihood in Ghana.
