Goldfields Wins CSR Award

The Goldfields Ghana Limited on Friday won the 2011 Sekondi-Takoradi Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry (STRCCI) outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) award. The award was presented to the company at the 2nd CSR Award Ceremony in Takoradi on the theme: �Creativity in CSR to Accelerate Economic Development.� Other award winners were Multimedia Telecommunication Network (MTN), All Needs Limited, Tullow Ghana, Cosmos Energy, Technique, Macro Shipping as well as Baker and Hughes. Mr. Seth Adjei Baah, President of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, urged companies to contribute towards the growth of the country through CSR. He said the concept of CSR is to improve the quality of life of the people hence the recognition of the organisations that were able to do so. He expressed concern that only few mining companies are complying with CSR and called on others to put mechanisms in place to contribute towards the development of the country. Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Omanhene of Essikado, who presided, said companies have a responsibility towards the communities in which they operate. He said businesses that do not use part of their profits to raise the standard of living of the people in areas they operate are failing the nation. Nana Nketsia said the cultural sensitivity of the people should be taken into account when implementing CSR.
