Kufuor: Ghanaians Must Elect Wise Leaders

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has advised Ghanaians to value the constitutional mandate given to them every four years to elect political leaders as a golden opportunity to direct the destiny of the country. He said elections offer the electorates the chance to choose a suitable person to rule them hence Ghanaians must pay rapt attention to the numerous election promises by the different political parties in order not to put themselves into slavery. We must look at elections with all seriousness, ex-President Kufuor told Citi News after a former Black Stars defender Sammy Kuffour visited him to invite him to his testimonial match on December 23. People say elections do not make democracy, but Ill remind them that elections tend to be the first step into giving ourselves democratic governance. He added: The concept of the vote is a delegation of the electorate of their power to the elected candidates. If you dont take care to ensure that the person you are giving your power to is not competent then Ill say youve thrown yourself into slavery. Ghanaians should know that we do not go into elections just for the fancy of it but for the seriousness to ensure that we give ourselves a government that will be responsive and sensitive to our need for peace, orderliness, development and fairness for our country to progress. Next year is a year of elections and we must ensure our votes are used wisely to benefit us, Kufuor stated.
