Deputy Minister designate for Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has rejected new transport fares introduced by the various transport unions describing it as unacceptable.
Oppong-Nkrumah, who is a member of the Finance Committee of parliament insists the transport unions have no justifications for the upward review of transport fares.
The Ofoase-Ayirebi Member of Parliament was speaking on Abusua Nkommo in reaction to the decision of the transport unions to increase fares by 15%. Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said, ”it would have been prudent for operators to maintain their old prices following the new tax cuts which has taken effect.”
”The campaign promise to cut nuisance taxes; to ensure businesses are relieved, has taken effect. What is left is for us to ensure that the various agencies will do their part so Ghanaians benefit fully from the tax cuts-so our efforts will not be in vain,” he added.
“One of such worrying situation is the increment in transport fares. We expected that, transport fares would have been maintained due to the reduction on petroleum tax and spare parts,” Oppong Nkrumah lamented.

Honorable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah should spare us the complain. This government was elected to solve problems not to complain. We shouldn't forget that this is a free market economy so the transport operators will find justification for the increment just as Kojo will justify his position among THREE deputy ministers for the information ministry of this small country where many communities share puddles with cattle and party vigilantes grant bail when the courts fail to do so.
come again my friend, are you saying the reduction of spare part taxes should necessary eliminate the agencies increasing fare prices? fuel are bought on a daily basis not the other way round. Hardly are spare parts bought each day. for your information, car owners have also increased their daily charges. come on, fuel prices on the international market is low, so it should have gone down if the so called petroleum taxes is gone. why the fuel increment? robbing peter to pay paul. hmmmmm
the increment in transport fares is so malicious and an act of ***barred word***. how can you increase fare at a time when the major reasons for increment fuel and parts have been reduce. if the government can not do anything to stop this noises then he has failed in advance
Oppong, there is no mechanism in place to check whether spare parts dealers would reduce their prices. With regards to fuel, it is clear to make such price reduction. Therefore, it will be prudent to remove spare parts from the pricing formula in order not to make such arguments. The reduction in prices is just to benefit spare parts dealers. If you have a problem regarding what a spare part is, then the best is to pick a ministry vehicle, dismantle it so that you can easily identify spare parts. Better keep quiet Oppong.
