The Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has taken his time to explain government’s decision to allow SHS final year and Form 2 Gold Track students to remain in school in spite of a number of reported positive COVID-19 cases in some schools.
In an interview on Adom TV’s ‘Badwam’ programme on Monday morning, the Minister expressed his disagreement with those that call for senior high schools to be closed down and the students sent home on the back of the reported cases.
Dr. Prempeh noted that of the 721 senior high schools in the country, with a population of about 400,000 in school and 13 reported cases across 5 schools, the calls were not tenable.
He further noted that there had been no reported cases even in some communities where some of our schools are cited. One cannot, therefore, call for all the schools in the country to be shut down, he argued.
“Those of us in leadership must listen to public concerns, and be guided by the evidence in making recommendations to the President.
Even if my child were in school at present, I would not, with the evidence as it stands, recommend to the President that schools should be shut down”, he argued.
Dr. Prempeh insisted that whether to close the schools or keep them open, we have to look at community trends as well as risks and rewards involved.

His kids are certainly abroad all paid for by GETTUND. Yours need to be indoctrinated to keep him in power. Whatever happens to them is just collateral damage.
The only reason u are calling for Ghanaians to be realistic is because this is the only time u are being realistic. This is the one problem u can't blame Mahama. It's simply irresponsible to open up schools ostensibly for exam while the exposing students to untested political campaigners. Parents can't visit but members can tour schools campaigning?? Headteachers meanwhile have been silenced by transfers and dismissals. If all akufo Ado wants is power, he can call of the election and gift himself another 4 years. Ndc can sue all they want but we know the outcome already.
Tsuuupid argument! You want the situation to get worse before you act, right? You are thinking like Donald Trump whose America is being battered like nothing they have ever seen! It is simple to say "if your child were in one of the schools" and that pre-supposes that your child is not in any of the reopened schools (perhaps schooling outside) and therefore is not affected by this dangerous decision you took! For those with kids in these schools the feeling is like a soldier being thrown onto the battlefield and you either fight to survive or get killed! You Napo, on the other hand is like the chief of defense staff who does not have to step on the battlefield but only get situational updates! Already one of the "soldiers" has fallen at KNUST SHS; how many more do you want to fall before you take it serious? A very tsuupid argument to make that because only 5 schools have recorded Covid-19 cases it is ok to let schools stay open! When only 2 people got infected in the whole of Ghana all schools were closed even when it was clear these cases had been imported! From those two cases we are at over 24000 cases in less than 5months! Which data is this minister looking at? You just used the students as a decoy to ease restrictions in order to do your primaries and get the EC to do your bidding at the peril of Ghanaian lives!
Wey can realistic ? You catch the Corona ; by God's Grace you recover and praise God your Creator for your life. Yet you send hundreds of thousands of defenceless school children to congregate in schools all for one purpose - to brainwash and sway them to your side just to win their votes. It is just reported Accra Girls has recorded 50 cases of Covid-19. This is what you want to happen.
