The commercial minibus driver [trotro] said to have killed a policeman by running his vehicle over him near the Trinity Theological Seminary in Accra last Friday in an attempt to escape arrest over an alleged traffic offence has been identified as Osei Bonsu.
He has since been declared wanted by the police.
The conductor of the bus [mate], Emmanuel Agyekum who was arrested last Friday evening (February 28, 2020), has since been granted a police enquiry bail.
Agyekum, a resident of Madina Zongo in Accra was handed over to the police at East Legon on Friday evening.
Information gathered by Graphic Online indicates that, Agyekum told the police that after the incident, the driver [Osei Bonsu] asked him to run so he also complied and took to his heels.
He said someone saw him running barefooted and accosted him to find out what had happened.
He told the police that, when he informed the person what had happened, the person took him to the East Legon Police station.
The owner of the vehicle, a Ford Transit bus, according to the police also showed up at the police station last Friday and has been asked to provide the documents covering the vehicle by Monday, March 2, 2020.
The owner has also been asked to provide the driver, Osei Bonsu within one week or would be sent to court as an accomplice.
What happened?
Last Friday, around 10 am the bus driver, Osei Bonsu, and his conductor [mate] were said to be soliciting for passengers at an unauthorised area around the Madina Zongo junction.
In an attempt to avoid arrest, he allegedly fled the scene with the vehicle when he was approached by the police.
Two policemen from Madina Unit of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), Sergeant Moses Appiah and a colleague, Corporal Joshua Azure pursued the driver of the Ford vehicle from the main Legon-Madina road and eventually caught up with him on the Trinity Theological Seminary route.
The two policemen got out of their vehicle and tried to stop the driver from moving his vehicle further according to some eyewitnesses, but the driver in an attempt to drive away, hit Sergeant Moses Appiah and as he tried to drive away, dragged the knocked down Sergeant Appiah under the vehicle.
Sergeant Appiah was dragged for 54.50 metres under the Ford bus when the police later took measurements at the scene of the incident.
The badly injured Sergeant Appiah was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for emergency treatment but he was pronounced dead later.
Following that the body was taken to the Police Hospital Mortuary.

THIS IS A STUPIDDD AND SAD DEATH. THIS DRIVER IS A BEAST, BUT GHANA POLICE PLEASE TRAIN YOUR MEN TO ACT TACTFULLY. IT MAKES NO SENSE TO STAND BEFORE AND BEHIND A CAR AFTER STOPPING IT. HELP YOUR MEN TO ACT PROFESSIONALLY. NO DRIVER FEAR POLICE BECAUSE OF ONE AND TWO CEDIS THEY TAKE FROM THEM. AGAIN IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSEEE FOR THE OWNER TO PROVIDE THE DRIVER TO THE POLICE. HE CAN HELP TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT HIM TO LEAD TO HIS ARREST BUT HE CANNOT BE MADE RESPONSIBLE. IF YOU THE POLICE AFTER APPREHENDING THE DRIVER HAS ALLOWED HIM TO KILL AND ESCAPE HOW COULD YOU EXPECT THE OWNER TO GET HIM FOR YOU. AND LASTLY THE CAR HAS NOT COMMITTED ANY CRIME BUT THE DRIVER. DONT KEEP THE CAR IF THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ITS DOCUMENTS.
If I am not wrong, I think this is the second time in about 7months that this has happened. It certainly make me suspect that the policemen probably had been molested drivers whenever they stop for traffic offenses. I hope they will stop brutalizing drivers for traffic offenses, so that these drivers stop killing them unnecessary. As much as running over a fellow human being is the most cruel thing to do, it is equally wise to our police men to work professionally and stop unnecessary victimization of people. If an insane know when he stops he is going to be mercilessly beaten by the police, he may speed off unlawfully and damn the consequences. The policemen killed at recently were said to be the torn in the flesh of most kasoa drivers and folks.
Police you have lawyers among you.The driver is the employee of the car owner. If the driver has commited a crime, the car owner can only show you his house. When i was employing him i took his passport size photoand his house number which i doubt the car owners do. The car owner should grt his lawyers to battle it out with the police. Did he send him to commit the crime?
I SUGGEST TO POLICE TO HAVE PATIENCE SOMETIMES. IN MANY CASES, IF DRIVER IS ARRESTED FOR ANY TRAFFIC OFFENCE WITH PASSENGERS IN IT, AND YOU DARE SUGGEST TO POLICE TO LET THE DRIVER SEND THE PASSENGERS AND REPORT BACK LATER TO POLICE UNLESS GOD IS WITH YOU OR THEY (POLICE) MIGHT SLAP YOU BY TELLING YOU TO GO AND EDUCATE YOUR FAMILY.MEANWHILE U COULD BE A POTENTIAL POLICE OFFICER SOMEWHERE TO EDUCATE PEOPLE IN CASES LIKE THAT.IT IS NOT ONLY WEARING THE UNIFORM THAT MAKES YOU A POLICE BUT THE CONTRIBUTION AS A CITIZEN AS WELL. MANY SENIOR OFFICERS ALSO TAKE ADVISE FROM THE CIVILIANS AND THAT MAKES THEM TO BROADEN THEIR IDEA AS OFFICERS. MAY THE LOST LIVE REST IN PEACE.
The police intelligence Unit should rather collaborate with the owner of the vehicle and GPRTU to find the driver not to intimate the owner of the vehicle.
We got to reason up as a nation. Where is the vehicle owner gonna find this driver? The police officers in their line of duty, should sometimes move away from the common sense of thinking and also apply the scientific way of thinking and do proper investigation for the culprit. We are getting tired of them with their 2 by 4 police.
Backward people with backward behavior. Take the owner to court for what crime? Was he the driver? This ***barred word*** intimidation of the people is what makes ppl not have sympathy for the police.
The indiscipline in the country is far beyond imaginable proportion. The Police and AMA are just so helpless. Get to Accra centeral and see the mess going on there. Traders and commercial cars and vehicles have taken up every available space making movement very difficult. no police or AMA gaurd to ensure sanity prevails. This govenment is a complete failure. i can't just imagine what this government and the current IGP are up to. The owner of the car is expected to have at least one family member of the driver as witness before handing over his car to the driver and thefore can become an accomplice by refusing to handover the driver. You don't just hand over your car to anybody without doing due diligence on the driver.
Ghana law is backwards. How can the owner provide the driver? The driver is a hired worker, so he the owner has no control over his freedom or whereabouts. What kind of a country and leaders do we have? Everything is backward and nothing works right in Ghana. Instead of the police to do their job in finding the driver, they want to harass an innocent man for nothing. This is what I call "abuse of power."
Say it again as if the driver is the son of the car owner.
