The National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has said the decision by MP for Awutu Senya East constituency to fire warning shots at a registration centre in Kasoa was justified.
According to Nana B, Mavis Hawa Koomson was not a violent person and so if she had to give a gunshot, it means she did so in self-defence.
"She came under serious attack and her life was under threat and she had to defend herself," Nana B said on UTV’s Late News on Monday, July 20, 2020.
Warning gunshots
Madam Hawa Koomson, MP for the Awutu Senya East and Minister for Special Development Initiatives admitted she fired a gun at a voters' registration centre in her constituency.
She explained that none of the men in her company at the time of the incident was armed when they got to the centre.
“I fired the shots myself,” she said.
According to the Special Development Initiatives Minister, she took the firearm – which she refused to identify – to the registration centre to protect herself.
The MP said she had gone to the registration centre because she heard her opponent had gone against the law to bus people from other places to register.
Registration Centre closed down
Earlier Monday, officials of the Electoral Commission closed down the Step to Christ registration center in the Awutu Senya East constituency after gun-wielding men stormed the premises.
Nana B's Defence
Speaking on UTV, Nana B said after looking into the matter himself, he learnt that armed persons on motorbikes surrounded the MP’s car in a way that suggested that they had intended to attack her.
He said Members of Parliament are given self-defence training specifically for moments like these.
According to Nana B, the incident should be a wake-up call for law enforcement agencies to be proactive in these dangerous times.
Police have since arrested four persons in connection with the incident.
Eyewitnesses say at least 15 persons had surrounded the MP before the warning shots were fired.
Call for resignation
Meanwhile, Security expert Prof Kwesi Aning has said Mavis Hawa Koomson does not deserve a position of trust and must resign as Special Development Initiatives Minister.
“It is my hope that the President will ask Hawa Koomson to step aside or probably dismiss her,” Security expert said.
His comment comes on the back of the Minister’s admission of firing gunshots at a voter registration centre in Awutu-Senya East Constituency in the Central Region.
He spoke to Joy FM's Evans Mensah on PM Express.

sometimes eye a mo fa mo adwene ky3 nhye kakra wai. some of you make politics look like robotics why? even those machines sometimes think aright. I sympathize with NPP but this needs no defence. IT IS DAM-N WRONG!!!! PERIOD.
@ Hahaha. Ma bro, Ka na Ka bio. If this shameful act had been committed by an NDC MP, hell would have broken loose. There would have been tall list or long queue of accusations and condemnations. Name them:- Jubilee House, Ghana Peace Council, Christian Council, GPPC, Islamic Council, CDD, IMANI, Council of State, Gh. Bar Assoc, NUGS, Gh Med. Assoc, Anyasafo eee, The Catholic Secretariat, Parliament, GUTA, Voiceferous Statesmen, National House of Chiefs, Media Commission, The Media Houses championed by Peace Fm, Danquah Inst, Pringprag, Musiga, CODEO, other CSOs, including Unregistered CSOs, and lastly the Ghana Poverty Assoc. The list is endless. NDC, God speaks on our behalf.
You are very stoupidd. Is she a security officer? What exactly was she even doing at the center, when she was not there to register?
I used to like nana addo, but the people who have surrounded him have made me withdrawn my support for him. He doesn't come across as a firm and serious minded president. A minister goes to a registration and give warning shots and she is still at post. And here we are we have a moron defending this despicable action of a minister.
THE VIOLENCE AT KASOA AND OTHER PLACES ARE ALL ORCHESTRATED BY NDC. HOW MANY TIMES DID NOT THE TOP OFFICIALS OF NDC DECLARE THAT THERE COULD BE NO NEW REGISTRATION. THEY SAID THAT BECAUSE OF ALL THE THE VIOLENCE THAT THEY WERE PLANNING TO DISRUPT THE REGISTRATION. HOW MANY TIMES DID NOT NDC CLAIM THAT THERE WOULD BE BLOOD SHED. THEY KNEW OF WHAT THEY HAD PLANNED TO DO. THEY HAD DECLARED THEIR INTENTION IN VARIOUS FORUM AND THEY ARE EXECUTING THIS AGENDA. GHANA POLICE AND ALL WELL MEANING GHANAIANS SHOULD HOLD NDC ACCOUNTABLE FOR ANY VIOLENCE AND ANY SOUL LOST DURING THIS REGISTRATION.
What is wrong with some of you ghanaians ? a female mp has fired a warning shot to dispare criminals from their activities you people are saying WHAT? Get a life people
So, OJAM, if the akufo ado run police has failed u for a year, whose to blame?? Who is to blame if Kasoa police is as u put it, as useful as a broken umbrella in a rainstorm? For the past 3 years, police and military recruitment has been done undercover filing its ranks with invisible forces and delta force members. NPP always manages to find and recruit violence Hawas and its no surprise her actions are being defended.
God has a way of exposing hypocrisy. If this was done by NDC MP, the whole National Security apparatus would have descended heavily on the NDC MP. Hypocrite Pastors within the National Peace Council would have come out heavily on the NDC MP. Okudzeto, the Chairman of Council of State would have come to blast the MP. There is no peace says the LORD for the Wicked
It is rather pathetic how some Ghanaians because of their political lenses and in most cases lack of the ability to fully digest and properly analyze information based on facts, just spew out condemnations and accusations. What would have been their comments if the MP have been harmed or possibly killed? I own lands at Kasoa and I am aware that the area is awash with young men and women who are unemployed and they roam about aimlessly and their services are constantly sort by those who want to create illegal acts. The police force in the area are as useful as a broken umbrella in a rainstorm. Some of these youth were hired by someone to destroy my fence wall under the pretext of constructing roads even though this person did not have any authorization from any government government institution. The case was reported to the police nearly a year ago and up to date not a single person has even been invited by the police for an investigation even though the police were given names and phone numbers of some of the culprits. The CID person in charge of the case has even collected the sum of GHS1,800.00 so far as well as my site plan and indenture and so far all I get are excuses. Some of these culprits constantly congregate under a mango tree smoking weed all day and the police know who they are and where they are yet do nothing. So if I had got a gun and taken the law into my own hands will the police then act? In a civilized society where the police officers role is to protect the citizenry then the MP should not have been put in the position where she feels frightened for her life to have to fire a warning shot to protect herself but unfortunately most of the time the laws in Ghana are lame and ineffective.
This case must be investigated before passing judgement on Hawa Koomson, if its true she was surrounded by thugs in an attempt to attack her, she has the right to self defence, Dr. Kwesi Annin should tell us what Hawa Koomson needed to have done. Assuming Hawa Koomson was attacked and wounded/killed, same so called security experts would have suggested the need for ministers to be train in weapon handling, the laws of Ghana allows certain category of people to own some specific type of guns, they must however be registered by the police.
