The Ministry of Education has strongly rebuffed former President John Dramani Mahama's recent claims of lax supervision and collusion in the West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry labeled Mahama's comments as a "calculated attempt to downplay the great strides made by the Ministry in improving learning outcomes in the country."
The Ministry highlighted the remarkable progress in WASSCE results, citing a substantial improvement from a 28.7 percent score (A1-C6) in Integrated Science in 2015 to an impressive 66.80 percent achieved by 2023 WASSCE candidates under President Nana Akuffo Addo.
"We have made monumental progress, and over the past few years, WAEC has instituted several measures to curb exam malpractices during the BECE and WASSCE test administration," the Ministry asserted. They emphasized the strict supervision measures implemented by WAEC in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, ensuring the integrity of the examinations.
The statement clarified that candidates caught cheating faced severe consequences, with subject papers or entire exams being canceled based on the nature of the malpractice. Invigilators and supervisors involved in malpractices were reported to law enforcement agencies and faced disciplinary proceedings, often resulting in termination from the Ghana Education Service.
The Ministry defended Ghana's superior performance in the WASSCE, citing the highest-ever 8 A1s recorded in 2020 and consistent improvement over the past six years. They attributed this progress to interventions like the Free SHS policy, providing students with access to better-prepared teachers, core textbooks, remedial packages, and increased teaching hours.
"The Ministry of Education wishes to assure our students, parents, guardians, and the general public that the quality of education and examinations at all levels, including the WASSCE, was not and will not be compromised," the statement concluded, urging stakeholders to disregard any information suggesting Ghana's withdrawal from the WAEC exams for WASSCE.

How many of the ministers have their children in these Free SHS schools.. Go to the the Universities and ask about the performance of these SHS students. We are collapsing our entire country because of the politicization of our education system. Very soon, we will not have confidence in our health care providers like nurses, midwives and doctors because of incompetence. If we are not careful, these nurses will be killing patients in the hospitals because they don't know anything. Teachers are writing the WASSCE for the students in about 90% of the senior high schools in Ghana except the elite schools like Prempeh College, PRESEC legon, OWASS etc. We are just being hypocrites.
Hypocrites attacking Mahama here. When the writing is black.amd white on the wall for allowing see, you are pretending nothing is happening inmthis country. The so-called free SHS is just quantitative, not qualitative. Is it not an open secret that leakage of WASSCE questions is more frequent in recent years? How does the country benefit from the mass production of SHS graduates who are not able to enroll in tertiary institutions because of poor performance? How well was the Education Minister able to to manage the school he established in California USA? Because of politics, you have turned a blind eye to the bad governance, corruption and failures associated with this NPP. Time, they say, will tell!
please stop theses baseless propaganda simply because you want to be vice president, Mahama never denigrade the results, we all listened to his comment, he was just woried about the quality of SSS graduates and how they stuggle first year at university and many dropping out dispite obtaining, 7 to 9 A's, and drawing comparism with when they all write WEAC, please these kind of propaganda will not make you to be selected as running mate nor make uselessss economic Bawumia turned digital Bawumia become president
Does Mahama have an advisor to help him make political statements in terms of campaigning based on policies that show that the NDC has better alternative solutions. Then I don't think he can undo the successes of the NPP by talking them down or denigrating them. I think it rather works against him and makes him not credible.
Mahama is just infantile, desperate and good for nothing.
