The Managing Editor of the Al-Hajj newspaper, Alhaji Bature Iddrisu, has wagered that should former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings not opt out of the race to contest President Mills for flagbearership position of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), he (Bature) should be barred from speaking on radio and contributing to panel discussions as a resource person.
The Al-Hajj newspaper Editor maintains that the former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings will announce her decision to back out of the NDC race in just a matter of days.
According to him, the party has scheduled a meeting between the NDC founder, Jerry John Rawlings and President John Evans Atta Mills and based on the outcome of the meeting, Nana Konadu will announce her withdrawal from the July 8 congress.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FMs Dwaso Nsem morning show, Alhaji Bature gambled that come hell or high water, the former First Lady will quit the flagbearership race, but in the event that his information turns out to be false and Nana Konadu still holds on to her avowed aim of contesting President Mills, he (Bature) should be banned from speaking on radio.
They want to rebuild the party so if they (Jerry Rawlings, President Mills and council of elders) are able to meet and put across the issues that they think is not going well or what they expect to be done by this government, I believe amicable solution will be arrived at and Nana Konadu will graciously bow out of the flagbearership race, he reiterated.
He maintained that it was never the intention of the Rawlingses for Nana Konadu to contest as president, and stressed that Mr. Rawlings meant it when he declared in Tamale that no member of his family was interested in the presidency.
It is not speculation, do you remember that Rawlings said in Tamale that neither he nor any of his family members is interested in the presidency. There were denials from Kofi Adams and co but if you compare it with what he reiterated in Kumasi, you can see that their intention is not for Nana Konadu to go and become president. Konadu is in the race because there is a problem and if it is amicably resolved, why will she continue to be in the race? he rhetorically asked.
But a leading member of the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR), Ernest Owusu-Bempah, rubbished Alhaji Batures claims, insisting that nothing will make the former First Lady back out of the flagbearership race. He derisively stated that Alhaji Bature only publishes stories to suit his own agenda, stressing that Nana Konadu will never back down.
He, however, added that even though he respects the opinions of Alhaji Bature, he is one journalist who has made so many wrong calls and will definitely get this wrong too.
According to him, Nana Konadu is busily and seriously campaigning in the Northern region, and with the people having accepted her message, they will surely vote for her on July 9.
But the Al-Hajj newspaper Editor insisted that President Mills will be the sole candidate come July 9, adding that the fact that Nana Konadu has picked forms, submitted it, gone through the vetting process and is seriously campaigning, does not mean she cannot back out.
