Unless the National Democratic Congress (NDC) immediately takes steps to stop one Barbara Asamoah, spokesperson of Get Atta Mills Endorsed (GAME) from providing usher services at the upcoming congress in July to select a presidential flagbearer, the congress will go down in history as a fiasco.
Many are those who have questioned the locus standi of Barbara Asamoah, alleged girlfriend of Local Government Minister, Ofosu Ampofo, in providing ushering services vis-a-vis her strong loyalty to President Mills, a contender in the flagbearership slot.
At the same time, her alleged boyfriend Mr. Ofosu Ampofo has lobbied the party headquarters for her to be given such a job though the pretty lady clearly stands in a conflict of interest position.
Barbara Asamoah is also the Deputy National Organizer of the ruling NDC and is unclear why the party hierarchy has yet to clarify the rules on intra-campaign for the flagbearership slot and where party executives stand.
The provider of usher services will be responsible for arranging lodging places for delegates and their subsequent meals and sitting positions at congress grounds. Many are those who are raising issues of possible camping and inducement of delegates to vote in a certain direction.
In a chat yesterday, Propaganda Secretary Richard Quashigah told the Ghana Daily newspaper he was unaware of that job being given to Barbara Asamoah. He downplayed suggestions that that could lead to a possible influence on delegates.
Mr. Quashigah disclosed that the job of securing accommodation for the delegates is the duty of the National Executive. His explanations have not assuaged the fears of angry party insiders who say Babara Asamoahs usher engagement has to be terminated immediately.
The NDC goes to congress July 8 to 10 to elect a presidential flagbearer to face NPPs Nana Akufo Addo for the 2012 presidential election. This is the first time in Ghanas political history that a female candidate is challenging an incumbent president for the flagbearership slot.
Political pundits say this Sunyani battle is a test to verify how the NDC is politically matured to deal with internal dissent.
Meanwhile, peacefmonline.com reached Samuel Ofosu Ampofo for his reaction, he declined to comment on the story.
