A former minister of state at the Interior Ministry in the erstwhile Kufour administration, Nana Obiri Boahene, has slammed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Paul Tawiah Quaye, for backing investigations into the alleged misconduct of eight police officers alleged to have insulted Deputy Minister for the Interior, Kobby Acheampong.
To him, the IGP displayed weak leadership in a situation which could have been handled with a bit of professionalism.
Nan Obiri Boahene further opines that for the IGP to have given his consent for the Rambo-style arrest of the police officers at that time of day- 9:30pm- clearly portrays he is easily intimidated.
In his candid opinion, there was no need for the police hierarchy to set up a committee to investigate the case since by their actions they have prejudged the officers.
In the first place, the issue was under investigations so why didnt they wait till after the completion of investigations before arresting and detaining the police officersIGP could have handled the case better, the police service is under the Interior ministry so the IGP could have saved the situation by first apologizing to the minister on behalf of the officers and also given him the assurance that the matter will be investigated thoroughly instead of rushing to effect the arrest of the officers by means of an armored car."
"By this singular act, I think the IGP is a female child (obaa ba) weak leader, I dont intend insulting him but I mean he is someone who is easily intimidated, he noted.
Speaking on Tema-based AdomFM, the astute lawyer expressed disappointment at the explanations offered by the police Public Affairs Directorate on the issue saying it clearly indicates that the top echelon of the service has left the officers in the lurch.
This action by the police hierarchy, he said, could demoralize other police personnel.
I was so disappointed when I heard one of the police spokespersons trying to justify the ministers actions. They claim they are investigating the case, yet they have already found the officers guilty. The police hierarchy did not help the eight policemen at all, they have disowned their own; they should have behaved like professionals, he stated.
He beseeched Ghanaians especially those in authority to be decorous in their speech even when addressing subordinates since soft words, calms angered hearts.
