The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have descended heavily on the flagbearer of the Progressive Peoples Party, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, for demanding the source of funding of their political activities.
At a news conference on Tuesday, the PPP leader challenged the two parties to publicly declare their source of funding to improve transparency and accountability in the country.
Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy Director of Communications for the NPP, Samuel Awuku said the party has no problem fulfilling a constitutional requirement, but Dr. Nduom must first declare his.
He said: Nana Akufo-Addo will consider [doing] anything in the constitution of our country. If our constitution mandates every Presidential candidate is mandated to declare his source of funding, it wouldnt be a challenge because it will be a constitutional obligation.
Mr. Awuku further stated that if it is a constitutional obligation, there will be no need to throw a challenge before you can respond. However, Dr. Nduom himself failed to tell us his source of campaign funds. How can you throw a challenge when you yourself you have not done so?
The Propaganda Secretary of the NDC, Richard Quarshigah on his part said the electoral laws of the country are clear on funding political parties.
It is not a matter of having laws in place, but it is a matter of the political parties making the necessary consciousness to abiding by those things that we have put on paper by ourselves, he stated.
