Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has refuted claims by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) that his education was bankrolled by the party.
The vice-presidential nominee of the opposition New Patriotic Party’s comment follows NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s claim that: “Bawumia’s father joined virtually every political party that existed after independence, from the Northern Peoples Party, then when the minority parties came together to form the United Party (UP), he joined that party as well. He later joined the CPP and he became the District Commissioner. He further joined Dr Limann’s party where he was made the Minister for Cocoa Affairs. Until his death, he was the Chairman of the Council of State, under ex-President J.J Rawlings and that is when he got scholarship for his son Mahamudu Bawumia to study abroad.”
In a rebuttal statement, however, the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana said: “I would like to state for the record that the NDC has had nothing to do with my entire education and I have never been on Government of Ghana scholarship for my studies abroad.”
Below is Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s full statement:
RE: NDC MADE DR. BAWUMIA SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE
My attention has been drawn to the above story reported by Ghanaweb on October 6th, 2016 (http://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/NDC-made-Bawumia-successful-in-life-Asiedu-Nketia-475118). In this story, the NDC General Secretary, Asiedu Nketia is reported to have said that the NDC facilitated my education by granting me a scholarship to study abroad. I am also informed that a similar statement was made by the Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Limuna recently in Walewale.
While my initial instinct was to laugh off and ignore such a palpable lie, I have come to understand that the NDC machinery specialises in the fabrication of such stories and would continue repeating them until they assume ring of truth.
I would like to state for the record that the NDC has had nothing to do with my entire education and I have never been on Government of Ghana scholarship for my studies abroad. My education history is as follows:
1969-1975 Sakasaka Primary School (Tamale)
1975-1982 Tamale Secondary School, Ghana – GCE O and A-Levels
1982-1984 Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (A.C.I.B) –U.K
Emile Woolf College of Accountancy, London, England
1984-1986 B.Sc. Economics (First Class Hons.)
University of Buckingham, UK
1987- 1988 M.Sc. Development Economics
University of Oxford , UK (Lincoln College)
1991 - 1995 Ph.D. in Economics
Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia., Canada
In fact the NDC as a party was only formed in 1992 when I was mid-way through my Ph.D studies at Simon Fraser University which was financed through fellowships and teaching assistantships.
So which part of my education (from primary school to Ph.D) was financed by the NDC? When did the government of Ghana ever offer me a scholarship? I will ask the General Secretary of the NDC to respond and not run away like they did when I presented them 170 facts from my recent lecture.
This is not how politics should be done. Why would persons such as the General Secretary of the NDC and a Minister of State engage in the deliberate fabrication and peddling of such a falsehood? If they are looking for something to attack me on they can at least start with a response to the 170 facts from my lecture.
What is clear is that the NDC has lost the argument on issues and now resorted to attacking my person with fabricated lies. That strategy will fail. You cannot run a country with propaganda and lies.
……signed……
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
2016 NPP Vice Presidential Candidate

DR Bawumia, even if you won scholarship to study abroad , is Ghana for NDC? Is Ghana their property? That is the idea they have that is why they have been stealing our money left and right. ***barred word***, they will lose the elections and many of them including their president will go to prison to set as presidence.
@ Ghana how can he provide evidence of his receipt. can you at a tertiary level provide receipt of your jhs much more talk of where he is gotten to. why don't you ask the general secretary to provide evidence of his claim.
im not surprised at all!! see how we have reduced Ghana politics to.if a palmwine tapper can buy a mansion in canada just for joining polutics, sell cement blocks in dollars in a sppose cedi economy, have one of the biggest wedding for a son who is also schools abroad with fees i guest paid from "sale of palm wine" what else cannot be said by this magician of a politician who exhibits proper reasoning paralyses? Now who paid for their(NDC) PC for Osu Ezenator Rawlings fees.if its been possible for a palm wine tapper to do this, an astute politician who once was chairman of council of state cannot be as irresponsible as the president who had he friends paying the childrens fees because he could not afford yet had millions invested abroad in cronies names.how many of these NDC guys had mansions before they came into power. if only our institutions of state were as powerful as they are else where? many of them would have known who they truely are after leaving office. a time is coming.........when ghanaians will reward men of intergrity and not a group of thives who only loot, create and share. from abetwanii to stevedore is from the forest to the sea. God is writing on the wall
pls all those who are saying PNDC scholarship PNDC come to power 1982 and Dr Bawumia was in London march 1982 already, so stop deceiving your self and talk current state of our nation.
Bawumia, please stop pulling wool over our eyes. You cant ***barred word*** all of us. In 1981-82, Rawlings was in power under PNDC. That was when your father was in Rawlings' government. That was when you got the scholarship and went to the UK, according to Gen Mosquito. The PNDC is the predecessor of the current NDC. Everyone knows that. So stop being smart by half by saying NDC was formed in 1992. Prove how you were able to sponsor your education in the UK. That is the question you need to answer, Bawumia.
The lies and the Propaganda of the NDC have always been Counter productive in the eyes of those Ghanaians who can read between the lines. Is even worst on the part of the then NDC-Government to be awarding scholarships not on the basis of ones academic merites but on the basis of ones affiliation to a Party. And yet the whole good Secretary of a big nad comopetent ruling Party like NDC, asking to be maintained in power is making such an assertion. Asem se be!!!!!!!!
You have not ans the question And I thought you would provide all the receipts especially after your completion.
Thanks Doc for your articulate response, but I think Doc, you have not answered all the issues raised by Asiedu Nketia and Allotey Jacobs. The fact of the matter is that, how did you pay your fees at Buckingham University at the time? did you work the menial jobs in the UK to do so? lets us know, how did you sponsor your education at Emile Wolf college? did you work at Macdonalds or what ? or again did your father sponsor you? what was the source of the money?, that is the question you have to answer. I agree with you the explanation for the funding of your PH.D but please explain the bachelors and Masters level funding. The fact of the mater is, you were sponsored by your father, who was a politician in the PNDC govt, we know his salary could never have paid for your fees to study in UK, so how were you funded? that is the question Doc. you have to answer and I hope you do so. have a blessed day.
ABLAKWA WAS SPONSORED BY NPP AND EVEN HAD NPP CARD.
You NEVER won a scholarship to study at the time of your study abroad. You father's st-o-l-en money was used to send you there in the first place. You only got did the assistanship/fellowship when you were already there. How did you get ther if not your dad's sto-len cash.
