The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku, has taken a swipe at the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Kofi Portuphy, for charging members of his party to defend themselves in the event of an attack by supposed NPP members.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, Mr. Awuku described the charge as unfortunate.
“I think the comments are unfortunate especially when the Police are making frantic efforts to bring the issue under control.”
There have been reports of attack on NDC members and destruction of government installations by some members of the NPP, in the wake of Nana Akufo-Addo’s victory in last Wednesday’s polls.
According to Mr. Portuphy, several efforts directed at the leadership of the NPP to call its members to order have failed hence his charge.
“I am the leader of the party; I am saying if they attack them they should defend themselves while seeking police protection. They should not fold their hands for the NPP to butcher them to death,” he added.
But Mr. Sammy Awuku said Mr. Portuphy’s comments are uncalled for.
“For us in the NPP, we have the strongest conviction that crime has no colour, and as long as we believe that our core party supporters are not involved, if the Police have any reason or if anybody is caught to have indulged in any act of indiscipline or hooliganism, Ghana is a country of law and we will not hesitate to cooperate with the Police. Listening to the National Chairman of the NDC, I find his comments very unfortunate,” he added.
Accusations of post-election violence exaggerated
Mr. Awuku had earlier opined that, the reported attacks on NDC members have been exaggerated.
He doubted the reports saying “there are not more than three or four examples, but when you make it topical as if it is across the country, over the 275 constituencies, I find it a bit outrageous.”
Attacks from NDC members
Meanwhile some angry NDC members disappointed in the party’s defeat, have reportedly been attacking some party executives and defeated MPs, who they blame for the party’s defeat.
A video has gone viral of an angry NDC member who stormed a party office in anger and threatened to beat up one of the national executives of the party.

THE OPERATION DIRECTOR OF GHANA POLICE CAME OUT TO STATE THAT POST ELECTION VIOLENCE IS NOW OVER OR UNDER CONTROL. I WAS EXPECTING PORTOPHY TO BEHAVE MATUURELY AND DIFFERENTLY FROM KOKU ANYIDOHO TO DELIVER PEACEFUL AND RECONCILING STATEMENT AND NOT TO REPEAT THE PROVOCATION OF KOKU ANYIDAHO. HIS FACE AND MANNERISM AT HIS PRESS CONFERENCE SHOW CLEARLY THAT HE HAS NO QUALITIES OF A GOOD AND A FRUITFUL LEADER. MAHAMA, NANA ADDO, WUNTUMI AND MANY LEADERS ACROSS DIFFERENT POLITICAL PARTIES ARE CALLING THEIR SUPPORTERS TO REFRAIN FROM ANY ACT THAT THREATENS THE PEACE WE ALL ENJOY. IT IS DISGRACEFUL AND SHAMEFUL FOR PORTOPHY TO DEPART FROM THIS TREND TO BE PROVOCATIVE AND INCITING. HE SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO THE NATION AND HIS OWN PARTY, FOR HIS ATTITUDE IS UNDESIRABLE.
How come Mr Chairman? It is very difficult to fathom how people in the NDC get their positions. What position did Mr. Portuphy hold in the party before ascending to the Chairmanship position? No wonder the NDC is a trial and error party. You see, the late President Mills tried three running mates before succeeding with the 'lucky' Mahama and what happened within the first term? The late President had to die for Mr Mahama's 'luck' to attain perfection. In the wake of the NDC 'winning' in 2008 the attack on NPP members was more than 50 times what has happened now and what did the NPP leadership say? They behaved like the real leaders they are by cooling down tempers. Mr Portuhpy can be a 'leader' in the NDC where party chairmen are chased with cutlasses, remember Koforidua congress? Let him pray that the youth he is inciting do not turn to him.
When a kid advises an adult then you know Ghana indeed has serious troubles. Not even Otabils crossing over prayers or Duncan Williams can save this great nation but each & every Ghanaian searching themselves and realizing that Ghana has too many hypocrites & greedy individuals hiding behind the label Christianity.
There is indeed something wrong with what he said and only well thinkers will notice it. "defend yourselves and when you survive then you report to the police". What happens if they dont survive? is Portophy going to give them breath of life or what. an elderly man should have simply condemn the issue than saying all those cheap talks , just a dirty politics
SAMMY SOUNDS LIKE NDC MEMBERS WILL BE ATTAKED. IF YOU ARE AN NPP DONT ATTACK ANYONE BECAUSE IT IS AGAINST THE LAW. LAWLESSNESS CAN DESTROY THE COUNTRY
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH WHAT MR PORTUPHY SAID. THE CONSTITUTION OF GHANA GRANTS EVERY CITIZEN THE RIGHT TO DEFEND HIMSELF WHEN ATTACKED. WHY DO YOU ALWAYS LOSE YOUR SENSES WHEN YOU GET POWER? IT IS LAWFUL TO DEFEND YOURSELF.
