President Nana Akufo Addo is expected to name the much anticipated Special Prosecutor some time after May 2017, Minister of Information, Mustapha Abdul Hamid has revealed.
He disclosed in an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr FM Wednesday, the government will lay a Bill in Parliament when the House reconvenes in May to be passed into law that will establish the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
The NPP in its 2016 manifesto Chapter 12, page 135, titled ‘Governance, Corruption and Public Accountability,’ promised to “establish, by an Act of Parliament, an Office of the Special Prosecutor.”
The party has indicated that the office would be “independent of the Executive, investigate and prosecute certain categories of cases and allegations of corrupton and other criminal wrongdoing, including those involving alleged violations of the Public Procurement Act and cases implicating political officeholders and politicians.”
Then newly elected President, Nana Akufo Addo on December 12, in an interview with BBC said his government would fight the menace of corruption which has bediviled the country.
“We have decided that we want to take the politics out of it [the fight against corruption], so that the screams of witch-hunting and others will not arise, by establishing an office of a special prosecutor or somebody who will be independent of the executive and whose remit will be to investigate and tackle issues of corruption.”
A section of the public especially some members of the opposition NDC have expressed apprehension with some asserting the office would be used to witch-hunt former government officials under the esrtwhile Mahama administration.
However, President Akufo-Addo has insisted that the office of the Prosecutor would be used to fight the menace of corruption.

A Special Prosecutor is exactly what it says ; and please do not attempt to defray the impression that this position does not matter carry any significance because anybody who has stolen monies by fraudulent means will be targarted by the SP office ; go to the US and learn about the workings of the SP ;the annual Auditors Generals report is a typical example with huge Fraud by civil servants and government official ; if modelled on the US SP ; they are a very powerful administrative bodies whose recommendations are usually not ignored by the Courts besides there are certain matters that takes quite a while to prosecute by the AG ; this time any matter of fruad and corruption will go straight to the SP with special investigators inclding detectives and lawyers ; this will free the police from certain duties which because of political reasons they cannot pursue besides people with evidence of any fraudulent can lodge their complaints and if a prima facie case is made the individual will be investigated by the SP to find out the FACTS for the Courts ; a lot of the contracts signed by the NDC were tainted with corruption over pricing ; if the SP was in play these will be investigated without the AG's consent but if a case is made the AG will send the matter to Court; most cases handled by SPs have a 90 % chance of success ; take the numerous cases of fraud in these sole sourcing contracts by the GNPC and the fraudulent activities of the Jon Mahama government ; Isofoton ; Gyeeda; re-painting of buses ; Ameri Deal ; Woyome ; these were blatant fraud by government political officials who took the decisions to allow such fraud tio happen ; this includes civil servants who should be investigaed and if proven these individuals jailed ; CAN YOU IMAGINE MARTIN -AMIDU AS THE NEW SPECIAL PROSECUTOR ; SOME NDC KRIMINAL WILL BE SHAKING IN THEIR PANTS AND HAVING SLEEPLESS NIGHTS !!!!!!!
God give us all our heart desire and wisdom to us all, Joel 2:28, Amen
Asem o! How do some people reason? The mention of special prosecutor does not take anyone to jail. There is no where in law that states that a commission of inquiry or special prosecutor should by hook or crook send people to jail. Jailing people is solely the preserve of the judiciary, I mean judges. And every accused is subjected to the process of law until he or she has defended himself or herself and proven guilty or innocent, so I don't see why people think special prosecutor is a ghost that everyone should be afraid of. Except there is a calculated attempt and connivance with judges to put people in jail at all cost, I don't see why anyone should be afraid of special prosecutor. All over the world there has been commission of enquiry and special prosecutorial commissions that never recommended court action against culprits. Recently the judgement debt commission faulted nana Addo, yet he is now the president of Ghana. If NPP is going to engage in witch hunting, that is a different ball game all together, either than that I don't see why a mere appointment of special prosecutor should put one on edge.
@aTOO You for know that NPP will collect all the state money which some people has taken them for the BENEFIT of the whole Nation, NOT few as you prefer. Nana will deal with any perceived corrupt person so that IN FUTURE someone also will Deal with perceived Corrupt Government Officials. When this continues, NO ONE will ever think of taken money meant for the Nation Building. S.P. is coming for the Good of the Nation. So if you are one prepare where you have hidden the money to bring it back. We have, AMERI, CP, ISOFOTON, WATERVILE, SUBAH, SADA, BRAZIL JOURNEY, BUS BRANDING, NSS, DUBIOUS CONTRACTS OVER PAYMENTS.
And Nsawam went agog with spectacular heartwarming glee......
Massa; Nana Addo is going to whip these NDC kleptomaniacs in line BRUTAL !!!!!;why is the NDC not talking about the demerits of a special prosecutor ; why have the NDC stopped talking about the economy ; health ; education an unemployment ; the NDC cannot talk because the NPP governance train is on the move and you better join it because the train will not STOP at the next junction 2020 but will stop at 2028 station for Dr Bawumia to take over for the 2028 elections ; massa ; it is hard to be in oppostion oooooo!!!!!! ; the NDC are the DREAD MODE because all the incremenating files is now with EOCO ; the properties purchased in dubai by Jon Mahamas and Kofi Adams and other places will be investigated ; Chief get ready for to roll very soon ; IT WILL BE A BRUTAL FIGHT !!!!! and we shall intimidate all NDC krooked thiffs before the law and WHO TOLD NDC WILL WIN POWER AGAIN : JUST FORGET IT : IT WILL NOT HAPPEN IN GHANA !!!!!!
***barred word***, Rubbish, Fooooolishness. Dreaded what? Everybody knows that is NPP's stock in trade. Hounding of political opponents and throwing them in jail with the aid of their collaborators in the judiciary. Kufuor packed the court and overturned the SC ruling and jailed Tsatsu. I do not blame NPP but the NDc for allowing these vampires and political vultures to come to power. I am sorry but they will jail you NDC guys so tomorrow when u have power you do not let it slip through your fingers to people like this
It was widely reported that Akoto Ampawu was nominated for that job. What has come of that.
The President then Candidate or Flagbearer told Presbyterian Synod in Koforidua last year around August 2016 that if he wins the Election he will Establish an Office of the Special Prosecutor to deal with Corruption in the country. He told BBC in December 2016 the same thing. Then in 7th January, 2017 he repeated the same thin when he was swearing in as President. As also stated in the write-up, it has been featured in the MANIFESTO OF THE NPP PARTY for 2016 ELECTION. From the background, NOBODY in the country should say that because of them that is why that office is to be established. By the way whether WITCH HUNTING or NOT it should be established to be PERMANENT in Ghana's Politics so that every Ghana Pesewa which will be taken wrongly it should be collected for the benefit of the Whole Nation. As it is now people are aware that NOBODY will collect the MONEY back so they were scrambling the STATE FUNDS with both feet, legs and mouths. If people (Politicians) know that there is a LAW for that, they will stop taking state (people) money.
ONAAPO !!!!!!; massa ;this is dread !!!!!!; former NDC appointees including NPP former employees in government are trembling and will be having sleepless nights because as Ken Agyepong said ; WE SHALL JAIL THESE NATION WRECKERS who think Ghana is cheap and do not want to be patriotic but prefer to steel ; the dockets are all withe EOCO today ; interesting times ahead for Ghana; if you know you have stolen state cash you better get out of Ghana or face the heavy fies or rison sentences ; Nana Addo will teach these NDC steelers a bifg lesson that corruption and over pricing and sole sourcing does not pay .
