Member of Parliament for the Assin Central Constituency in the Central region, Kennedy Agyapong says some holidays must be removed from the country’s calendar with immediate effect.
To him, the holidays are “too much” – explaining that, the numerous holidays will drag national developments, hence, some must be scrapped.
His plea was after President Akufo-Addo proposed legislation to Parliament to designate August 4 as Founders' Day whiles September 21 will be observed as ‘Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day’.
Kennedy Agyapong’s call has already been raised by some concerned Ghanaians who want the country’s holidays to be reduced.
Speaking on Adom TV, the NPP MP however suggested merged public holidays whiles others too are removed from our calendar.
According to him the holidays are too much in Ghana as such government should reduce it so we can move forward as a nation.
Adding that, “What I believe is that they can set a founders day so we celebrate it once. They should set it as 'founders’ day' to showcase everyone’s role they played each year. It can even educate the citizenry in terms of history. I don’t have problem with that . . . ”
“I don’t have a problem with Nkrumah standing tall. He did great things for Ghana. He is a dreamer. He did a lot for Ghana. Akufo-Addo has a challenge to beat what Nkrumah did . . . ” he stressed.
Ken Agyapong however commended President Akufo-Addo for the proposal stating that those who fought for the independence of the Ghana must be celebrated.

I have always argued with my friends and families in Ghana about this. Ghana as a developing nation has way too much bank holidays compared to developed countries like the UK. UK has 8 days in total for the whole year and its includes the Christmas and Easter holidays and Ghana has about 13 or 14 bank holidays . . . this is not good for a economic growth if we want to achieve.
United Kingdom as a developed has 8 days in today and as it stands now Ghana has 13 and its not good for a developing country.
The holidays on our calender is not even upto 15 so why must some be taken off. You people want some to be taken off cos u have businesses and wish the employees work on that day whereas the employess also want those holidays to rest small since most of them work from mon-fri and some also attend lectures from friday-saturday so need those holidays to spend time with their kids and do other things so Ken allow it to be as it is cos i will only agree with u when u prove that among all the countries in the world, Ghana is the only country that got more holidays as compared to others worldwide
