Education Minister Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh must apologise to his predecessor Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang for describing the latter as a “disgrace” and “embarrassment” as a minister, former Minister of Education Betty Mould-Iddrisu has said.
Dr Opoku Prempeh on Tuesday, 14 November told Kwadwo Asare-Baffuor Acheampong (KABA) on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen political talk show that: “Her [Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s] four-year tenure under John Mahama was an embarrassment”.
Adducing evidence to back his damning verdict on the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr Opoku Prempeh said Prof Opoku-Agyemang as Minister left the education sector burdened with the following debts per the Mahama administration’s own handing over notes:
Feeding Grants for Colleges of Education – GHS36 million
Feeding Grants for Special Schools – GHS4.7 million
SHS Subsidy – GHS24 million
Progressively Free Senior High School debt – GHS33 million
Capitation Grant, GHS8 million
GETFund debt – GHS3.7 billion
“She doesn’t understand education”, Dr Opoku Prempeh insisted.
According to him, Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s deputy, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has also made peddling of falsehood his stock-in-trade and has entered opposition with that penchant.
In Dr Opoku Prempeh’s estimation, the success rate of the free senior high school programme of the Akufo-Addo government is 90%.
In a statement, however, Mrs Mould-Iddrisu said: “It is unfortunate that our current Minister of Education described his predecessor the Hon former Minister of Education as ‘a disgrace and an embarrassment’ for allegedly leaving debts in the Ministry of Education at the end of her four-year tenure.
“Professor Opoku-Agyemang is a distinguished and accomplished academic who rose to become vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.
“Her achievements in the arena of Education are legendary. It is unfortunate that women have to be subjected to such abuse in the discharge of their official duties. I am calling on the Hon minister Dr. Opoku Prempeh, on behalf of the women in Ghana, especially Women in Politics to withdraw and apologise for making such derogatory comments about a distinguished woman professional who is a known role model globally.
“The Minister must stay focused on ensuring and delivering an effective implementation of the Free SHS programme which has been hit with several challenges with the tendency of eroding gains chalked in the educational sector. The Minister of Education under the current circumstances must be seen to be the busiest appointee, not to waste precious time in insulting his Senior in the name of politics”, Mrs Mould-Iddrisu added.

Apology my foot. Opoku Agyemang was a very incompetent minister....... NDC th.i.e.f.... You Betty must rather apologise to Ghanaians for paying Wayome money he does not deserve. you took your share... It was a clear case of create, l00t and share. The special prosecutor is coming for you.
These NDC people and their associates have provocatively entitled to themselve infantile sentiments of victimhood. That is, they think they can only be victims, never villains. I personally feel Dr Prempeh's words were quite brutal. But how these NDC band can perpetrate and then secretly revel in vicious assaults against others (more honorable than them) and yet cry out loudest when they're the sufferers, is beyond me! What sort of innuendoes and open insults hasn't the lady called Valerie Sawyer, used on elderly statesmen in her periodicals? Who else uses their tongue as ir-responsibly as Mr John Mahama? His examples are so gross they simply defy enumeration and recounting. A few days ago, Felix Ofosu Kwakye impudently described Nana Akuffo Addo as a man of little education and less educated than Mr Mahama. I was shocked at his juvenile, brassy insolence.
See who is seeking an apology. Arrr Have you apologies to Ghanaians when you superintended over dubious judgement debt of which Gracious Amidu reveals.
So, we should not say if a woman is incompetent? Why? Ghanaians must talk like NAPO to see a change and economic development. We protect incompetent and ***barred word*** in Ghana and Africa too much. We need to change.
The current Minister backed his statements with data. What does Betty have to support her assertion? The fact that somebody rises to become Vice-Chancellor of a University doesn't she would perform well as a Minister of State. The skills needed to do either are different.I also don't get Betty playing the gender card. So because the Prof is a woman, she cannot be criticized? Please....!
This beautiful will def'ly go to prison, so allow her talk as a free person for the short time she has in our free world. Prison is her new abode yet to come.
Please can the special Prosecutor bring back the criminal aspects of WOYOME dubious judgement payment back.If yes then i wish the current Parliament also must consider turning some of our castles into Prison Yard for some of these corrupt Political Leaders. If Saudi has done it why not Ghana. It is high time we change the sleeping place of some of these corrupt politicians in the NAME OF LEGENDARY in their fields of study and so on.Special Prosecutor change the sleeping place of Betty Mould Idrisu and her brother.
That guy calling himself Doctor is rather a fisherman because he talks like a fisherman.
