Deputy speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin, has questioned President Akufo-Addo’s commitment in fighting corruption, indicating that his campaigns were funded by some Ghanaians in his attempts to become President of Ghana.
He said his financiers were not “Father Christmas”, and will seek to also benefit from his current position.
“The people who have sponsored you [Nana Addo] are in the shadow, and they are calling the shots. I’m being brutally frank. We can’t fight corruption, and when I speak out then I am lambasted and insulted, but that is the truth and you cannot take it away. Recently I was talking about Nana and I said well after fighting three world wars and becoming President, all those three world war people funded you and now you say you are going to fight corruption, you think they are father Christmas ?”
Cleanse the system
He therefore charged the President to lead the way in cleansing the system, redefine politics and also reduce the cost of political business in Ghana.
“So what I expect the President to do is to lead us to cleanse the system. We change the system, we redefine politics, we redefine political campaign, we reduce the cost of this business and make sure it is free… Once you are able to do that you can still have your conscience, your integrity, your willpower, and you can take decisions that will benefit the people of Ghana. “
He was speaking to students’ Parliament at the University of Education Winneba- Kumasi Campus, on the theme; ‘Parliamentary Democracy in Ghana- a practitioner perspective’ when he made these comments.
Mr. Bagbin, MP for Nadowli Kaleo, and one of Ghana’s serving legislators, also touched on corruption and described it as systemic, saying “I hear people talking about corruption everyday and everybody knows that corruption is a cancer and it is killing us and we are pretending that we are committed to fighting it, but we all know that corruption is systemic. If you want to curb corruption, you change the system.”
According to him, corruption can only be curbed if the system is changed.

this guy is looking for financiers to fund his campaing against mahama. masa u have a long way to go. defeating mahama will not be an easy task looking at the monies he has aready started spending just to become a flagbearer again and then be defeated in the general elections. sometimes i look at this mahama guy and I ask myself what kind of du>mb person is this? i dont know if it bcos the money he is using is not from his own sweat but a wise person will invest that money for his family and generations after him will never suffer even if they choose to be lazy. but God has a way of taking back from ple who stole and giving it back to the owners. i hope he comes back to contest so that we can retrieve some part of the stolen loot from him. funny man mahama. u could not retain the seat when in power but believes you can win it from someone. well he needs to experience what elections really are when you are the opposition. so ndc bring him on.
i think for once am in bed with an NDC PERSON!!!! i always say the only president who can make Ghana and africa great as a whole is one who will not give out money to be voted for!!!
This MP has shocked me paaa. I learnt he is an accountant by profession. Accountant my profession and you are talking like this. "That Nana addo cannot fight corruption, what he must to is to cleanse the system. Bagbin a s3 whan whan, what is your understanding of cleansing the system? and in cleansing the system what do you intend achieving? Are you not preventing corruption when you cleanse the system. You see our elders do no think and if they think, they don't understand anything. What they know is just combining alphabet. You have been MP for so many years. You have a big platform. You could have you this occasion to give education that when you support a political party, it is not necessary automated to be expecting back something in equal terms. Or if even you are expecting something it should be on a normal accounting gain not abnormal gain. YOu see, when you do that we the youth would respect you and not what youve done. I don't blame you cos majority of Ghanaians are illiterate to the extent that they cannot read understand and write so people like you are free just to use word.
You know what? You socialist boys will never cease to amuse some of us. Politics is business and must be treated as such. Who can do business without capital? If Nana was funded by people it was because they found him worthy of sponsorship. Note that some funded him for three times as you said but were not tired because the saw that his losses were "cooked". They also funded him because he was a self made person who could bear a substantial part of the cost. Man, if you do not have what it takes to be in the political race for the presidency kindly back off! Who should make elections free for you to contest without proving your worth? After all you schooled free and you want to be President for free? You must be jokking! You see, JJ became head of state and later president by riding on the necks of people without any sweat. First on Boakye Jan's neck and secondly on Akatapore and Limann's necks. That is why some of you PDCs and CDRs got into parliament. You must thank your stars for seeing the four corners of Ghana's parliament and being the longest serving member. Stop dreaming of someone making politics free for you. Fighting corruption has nothing to do with making politics free. In Saudi Arabia are there any political campaigns? How come corruption has sky-rocketed to such an extent that they have to fight it head-on? Please let your years of serving in the parliament be a source of knowledge not a draw back!
One of the good people in NDC, Alban Bagbin, but Asiedu Nketiah, Kofi Adams/Adamu, and co do not want to hear his names let alone his face. Its only the looser ex-president who is bound to loose again should he ( Mahama) comes as flag bearer for NDC.
I agree with the Hon. MP for Nadowli/Kaleo. I also believe that the President could change the system as suggested by the HON. MP. Government should take up the task of funding political parties.
We are agree those Financiers are not "Father Christmas" and they will have to be paid back by NADAA, but what you and c0rrupt followers and NDC Members do not understand is that: Instead of giving them FREE MONEY and signing C0RRUPT DEALS like you people did with SMARTYs, RLG, ISOFOTON..etc. they will work for it. All those NPP financiers will not get FREE money, they will be giving contracts and will ONLY BE PAID after they have delivered to expectations, that is how they will make their money back. NADAA will NOT dash out V8s, FREE MONEY etc. NADAA/NPPs method of paying back Financiers is the same around the world...unlike the NDC who were giving V8s to John Dumelo, people who never even planted a tree for Ghana. SHAME ON YOU! #WebHunter
