The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Nadowli Kaleo Alban Bagbin has described as needless a provision in the 1992 Constitution, requiring one to be forty years in order to be eligible to run for the office of the president.
According to chapter 8, article 62 of the 1992 Constitution, a person shall not be qualified for election as the president of Ghana unless: (a) he/she is a citizen of Ghana by birth, (b) he/she has attained the age of forty years; and among other requirements.
Speaking as a guest at an inter-tertiary debate competition at the University of Cape Coast as part of the 55th SRC celebration, Bagbin argued that age should not be a barrier to one’s ambition of attaining the high office of president.
“The issue of age as a criteria for qualification or eligibility to the office of the president is a key matter we have to look at,” he stated.
“I believe that there is no need to put an age [limit]. I think it is important for us to allow the people to choose.
“Yes, the people will be in the position to determine whether the person is capable, whether the person is matured, and whether the person has the requisite experience,” he added.

How about allowing people under 18, including toddlers, to vote? We should limit on nothing!
BAGBIN EVER SINCE HE INDICATED TO CONTEST NDC PRIMARIES HAS EXPOSED TOO MANY NEGATIVE SIGNS OF HIM WHICH MAKES HIM EVEN UNFIT TO HOLD OFFICE AS 2ND DEPUTY SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT. AMONG THEM WAS HIM BEING NAMED IN THE DOUBLE SALARY SCANDAL AND HIS SUGGESTION TO THE PRESIDENT TO INTERVENE ON THEIR BEHALF BEFORE THE MATTER CAUSE BAD FAITH OR BLOOD BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT AND THE OPPOSITION. MEANWHILE, UNTIL THE DOUBLE SALARY SCANDAL ALL THE ACTIONS OF THE OPPOSITION IN PARLIAMENT HAD AIMED TO GENERATE BAD FAITH WITH GOVERNMENT. THE RECENT STATEMENT OF BAGBIN TO DEMAND THE REMOVAL OF THE 40 YRS REQUIREMENT TO BECOME A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SHOWS BABGIN AS IMATUREEE AND AND EMPTY CHALATANT. HOW MANY PEOPLE BELOW FORTY HAVE WISHED TO CONTEST AS PRESIDENT AND WHAT IS THE CHANCE FOR SUCH A PERSON TO WIN ELECTION IN GHANA. WHY DO WE HAVE RULES TO DETERMINE THE AGE TO GO TO SCHOOL, TO VOTE IN GHANA, TO BE CONSIDERED AS MINOR OR ADULT. BAGBIN HAS SHOWN CLEARLY THAT HE IS LIKE THOSE TYPE OF GUYS WHO GET INTO ARGUMENTS JUST FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENTS AND SUPPORTS ISSUES EVEN IF THEY HAVE NO MERITS. THEY WASTE TIME AND RESOURCE JUST FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT. THEY HAVE NEVER GROWN OUT OF THEIR SECONDARY SCHOOL BOYISH ATTITUDE. I HUMBLY SUGGEST TO HIM THAT IF HE HAS NO SENNSIBLE ISSUE TO PUT ON THE TABLE IT IS BETTER FOR HIM TO KEEP QUIET.
