The Minority in Parliament has threatened to stage a demonstration to protest the National Identification Authority’s quest to accept only passports and birth certificates as identification forms for the registration and instant issuance of the Ghana Card.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority has said over 70 percent of Ghanaians could be denied the Ghana Card if nothing is done.
The issuance of Ghana Card was among the government’s key promises to formalize the country’s economy.
“We in the minority have indicated that we are prepared to use constitutional and legal means, and if possible, we will go on the streets,” the Minority Spokesperson for Communications, Alhaji A. B. A. Fuseini said to Citi News.
“We are talking about a population of about 30 million Ghanaians today. But you are doing an exercise in which only 7 million people, at best, in the widest possible participation [will be included].”
“Twenty-Three million people will be excluded. They will be deliberate, as a matter of conscious policy, be left out of the exercise. How can you call that a national exercise?”
The Minority is scheduled to hold a press conference in parliament today [Tuesday] over issues relating to the roll-out of the Ghana Card by the NIA.
The Minority also served notice of boycotting the registration of MPs onto the NIA database.
The Minority MPs said they are boycotting the exercise because the NIA has failed to address some concerns raised in terms of the identification requirement and cost of the entire project.
Former President John Mahama has already described the NIA’s approach as illogical.
According to him, the move will denationalize over 20 million Ghanaians.
He however assured that the NDC, will do everything possible to have the identification scope expanded for the exercise.
Meanwhile, officials of the NIA are expected later on Tuesday in Parliament to brief the House on their plans for the nationwide roll-out of the Ghana card registration.
They will meet selected committees of the House.
It is unclear if the planned registration exercise for MPs and Parliamentary staff would commence.

What sensse does it make? What happened when they were approving and indeed passing the bill on national card in parliament into an act? Double standards.
Seriously. do these guys really want us to progress in the country. am really disappointed in them
It is okay to criticize, but criticism without suggestion or recommendation is empty barrel. NDC, you say you don't want passport, neither do you want birth certificate or personal identification. What do you want? Until you make any recommendation or suggestion as to what should be the criteria for identification, you may please keep your ***barred word*** mouths shut and don't disturb our peace under this God sent president.
One can not understand these guys no matter how you try to get the logic in their argument. This matter is very simple that my kg2 girl should understand. NIA says no voter ID will be allowed as evidence or proof of citizenship. However, passports, birth certificates and any two people could testify for your Ghanaian nationality within the community you'd want to register.....SIMPLE. What is their fear? Oh, so what we suspected in 2016 is playing out to be true abi? Thankfully there are no barriers to stop you from demonstrating or organizing another UNITY walk. Just walk till you are tired no one will heed your call.
THE ONLY THING NDC KNOWS IS TO RIG ELECTIONS, SO THEY ARE TRYING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO DISTURB THE GOVERNMENT OVER THE NATIONAL IDENTITY CARDS, WHERE IN THIS WORLD HAVE YOU HEARD THAT VOTERS ID CARDS SHOULD BE USED FOR NATIONAL ID CARDS, ONLY NDC PARTY. NDC SHOULD NOT BE LISTEN AT ALL. EVERY WHERE IN THIS WORLD ONLY BIRTH CERTIFICATES AND PASSPORT ARE USED TO REGISTER. I DONT UNDERSTAND THESE NDC PEOPLE, TURNS EVERYTHING TO ARGUMENTS, AND CONFUSION
Well, they should be on the road by now. It's their cup of tea. Never again. The days when they acted with impunity is over. Do we need any prompting for their embarking on the demonstration? The roads are clear. Absolute indiscretion from a group of callous cunning hypocrites calling themselves "honorables".
NDC has started panicking. They are afraid the Ghana Card will be used for future elections in this country. They are at a loss how to get their 'aliens' onto the national database. Tne NIA has sated categorically that, you can get your card using passport, birth certificate or be identified by at least two people at your place of registration. This is simple and reasonable. They can demonstrate everyday, but those of us pure Ghanaians will register for our cards. How many cards did NDC issue out in Ghana during their 8 years in power? They employed people, payed them salaries and allowances for doing no work at the NIA. Fickle-minded group.
They should be allowed to march from Accra to Tamale. These Neanderthals think we are all s-t-u-p-id.All they want is to allow all the Togolese and other aliens they fraudulently allowed to vote to be captured in the national data base. How come those in opposition always think that in every issue it's what they want that should be done. If they will not register they should step aside and allow other genuine Ghanaians to be registered.
