The Electoral Commission (EC) has rejected reports that the removal of the Chairperson and her two deputies is affecting activities at the Commission.
Head of Communication for the Commission, Eric Dzakpasu, said nothing has changed and staff are motivated to work.
“We are focused on doing our job because we have a serious mandate to deliver to the people of this country. The Commission’s staff woudn’t want to be distracted. It is an onerous responsibility that we have,” he told Joy News.
His comments follow the removal of the Electoral Commissioner Charlotte Osei and her two deputies from office by President Akufo-Addo for “misbehaviour and incompetence.”
The removal is based on the recommendation of a committee set up by the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, to investigate alleged acts of corruption, misconduct and misbehaviour by the three commissioners.
Mr Dzakpasu said as a Commission, staff are permitted to have their personal expectation about how the matter was handled and how it ended but the entity is only concerned with carrying out its mandate.
He rejected the perception that the Commission is in a crisis, stressing that there are systems and processes in place as well as the personnel at various positions who are mandated to work.
“The Electoral Commission is still credible because our core function is delivering on elections and we delivered on the 2016 election which has been described as one of the best.
“Even in what people are calling our crisis mode, we have handled political party elections and they have all gone well,” Mr Dzakpasu said.
Regarding fears of incapability of the Commission to deliver on a proposed referendum in the President’s bid to create more regions, he said the EC is prepared and will deliver.
The spokesperson for the EC said a lot of discussions have gone on behind the scene with the Regional Reorganisation Ministries.
Mr Dzakpasu said Ghanaians should be assured that once the EC is mandated to deliver on the referendum, it will do so.
He also called on their stakeholders to support their work as they begin to roll out scheduled activities.
