A Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Gyampo has warned that Former President Mahama would lose the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential race if he depends on popularity.
According to him, the former leader should look beyond popularity within his party to cause acceptance for himself.
Speaking on an Accra based FM Station, he said “There is a difference between popularity and acceptance. In the 2016 election Mahama was popular but in spite of the popularity he still lost the election.”
Professor Gyampo’s comment comes after John Mahama officially declared his intention to contest in the party’s presidential primaries.
Several political analysts have waded into Mr. Mahama’s decision to contest for the party’s seat.
Whereas some perceive it as a wrong move, others believe he has the capabilities to lead the party in the 2020 Presidential elections.
Mr. Mahama would be facing stiffer competition from the likes of Sylvester Mensah former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority, Alban Bagbin, MP for Nadoli Kaleo, Ekow Spio-Garbrah and Joshua Alabi who have already expressed their intent to contest ahead of the party’s polls.
However, Professor Gyampo believes the former President stands tall amongst the other candidates who have declared their intentions, but would lose if he thrives on popularity.
He said “Mahama may be popular within his party but he should also be mindful that the others are also working hard behind the scenes.”
Meanwhile, former Trade Minister under the erstwhile Mahama government, Dr. Spio Gabrah, who also intends to contest in the race, has warned party delegates against voting for Mahama in the upcoming party elections.
According to him, the description of Mahama being incompetent during the 2016 elections would go against the party should he be voted to lead the party in the 2020 Presidential elections.
The NDC is expected to hold its Presidential elections on December 7, this year.
The one who emerges victorious would lead the party to contest in the 2020 general election.

How do you determine he is NPP, Cant we be objective to issues without tagging to parties?
IKE, IS IT BECAUSE NDC ALSO WON POWER THROUGH LIES IN 2008 AND THE LIES WERE EXPOSED DURING JDM TENURE WITH FULL GLARE CORRUPTION AND INCOMPETENCE. YOUR MAN JDM NOW A VERY LOW IMAGE IN THE EYES OF THE GHANAIAN AND IT WILL BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO ERASE THAT WITHIN 4 YEARS BECAUSE GHANAIANS DO NOT HAVE SHORT MEMORIES ANY LONGER AS JDM THINKS. SO HE IS COMING BACK. WE STILL REMEBER ALL THE WICKED THINGS HE AND HIS COHORTS DID TO GHANAIAN. WE are waiting for him. we are not ***barred word*** as he JDM thinks about us.
So the man is NPP and so WHAT ? what mediocre thinking is this !!!!! ; does not NDC gurus give their opinions about NPP politicians all the time !!!!!; the man is expressing his opinion about Jon Mahama which are facts; if you do not want to hear it just ignore them because this is politics ;the fact is that you may be a popular person in society but when it comes to the serious business of governace using your popularity to get to the top is easy but staying at the top and displaying your competence to do the job is the problem ; JOn Mahama found that to his cost because being popular meant he was very generous with wasting public funds and displaying utter incomptence and stilling from the top; popular people don't make good leaders because popular men and women are all things to all men .
So, my revered professor cannot hide his dislike for JM. He is trying hard to be neutral but still NPP scent is exuding from the statement he make. Please, leave JM alone. WHY IS NPP SO SCARED OF JM? IS IT BECAUSE YOU WON POWER THROUGH LIES AND THE LIES ARE NOW BEING EXPOSED BY YOURSELVES? WE DEY!
So , he can't express his opinion genuinely? Comments and advice are free you know. The issue is if JM does not win with a huge margin, then he will have a problem of acceptance even in his own party. Lessons from Nana Addo's first attempt when there was a run off against Alan before he won. Over time his acceptance in the party increased to over 85%. The whole party then was behind him for the kill in 2016. But it's early days yet. Let's see how JM will at his first ever contested flag bearership.
OH YES..... HE IS PAAAAAAAA. WAS MY LUCTURER
