Former National Organizer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams, says the approach by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to disband vigilante groups during his State of Nation Address is not the best.
He described the approach as “weak” and “wrong” – after calling on the President to use the appropriate move to tackle the issue.
It would be recalled that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his State of the Nation Address called on the country’s two major political parties, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to disband their vigilante groups or would be forced to do that himself through a legislation.
According to him, issue of vigilantism has become a source of worry to Ghanaians indicating that the country’s security agencies will not look on unconcerned while these groups perpetrate various forms of violence.
“I have asked the leadership of the NPP to extend an invitation to the leadership of the NDC for such a meeting on vigilantism. The security services of the country will be on standby to assist this meeting.”
“If voluntary disbandment by the parties is not feasible, then I will initiate legislation on the matter. Vigorous debate and the exchange of ideas should be the true basis of political dialogue and competition in our country, not the activities of party vigilante groups”, President Akufo-Addo said.
But speaking on NEAT FM’s evening political program, ‘Torchlight’, Mr Adams questioned,“Who said vigilantism is limited to just NPP and NDC?”
“This is not the matter of NPP and NDC. Government should play a key role in this to solve the situation. They should enter the system of National Security to know which forces are been deployed at the blind side of the police and army forces to work. The president must stand on his authority, wanting NPP and NDC to solve this won’t work,” he told host Mac Jerry Osei Agyeman.
