Former President John Mahama has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of beating war drums ahead of next year’s general elections.
According to him, during the gun violence-riddled Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on 31 January 2019, an NPP official boldly told the supporters of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who were at the receiving end of the brutalities meted out by national security operatives, that the rumpus was a mere dress rehearsal for the 2020 polls.
“These are war drums that are being beaten and one cannot take them lightly that something is not going to happen in 2020”, Mr Mahama observed when he met the Christian Council of Ghana at its secretariat in Accra, recently, adding: “God forbid that we have that kind of violence spread nationwide; you wonder what would happen to this country of ours”.
The flag bearer of the NDC expressed confidence in the Ghanaian people, who, he said, will not allow the Ayawaso West Wuogon-like violence to recur.
“We believe that the people of Ghana will protect their election”, he told the Council, adding: “They will protect their ballots and not allow any thugs to come and intimidate them and disrupt the elections”.
The meeting formed part of the NDC’s ongoing consultations with identifiable groups and key stakeholders ahead of the 2020 elections.

Is that the NDC manifesto? Violence and beating war drums? Apuu biem...
Who in his right frame of mind will even waste the precious time to vote for incompetentt person like you. we have witnesses so many elections in this country, Chireponi, Atewa, Agbobloshie, Sankore and so many places. Dumsor is still on my site
By the unction of God no war will happen in Ghana.
Election is just at the corner and instead of you picking your running mate and bring your manifesto you go round and just hipe tension, create stories and insight Ghanaians against the EC. Were you not the ones who said elections are won at the polling station and not by the help of the EC so what has changed now for you and the NDC claiming the EC will rig the election. About the war drums,it is hypocrisy because the NDC and its Ofosu Ampofo has said it all on records. You just want to draw our attention now so that if you carry the action during the election then you link it to NPP. Please for your own good choose your running mate, introduce your manifesto and educate Ghanaians on your policies, accept your previous shortfalls and apologise and tell us how different you are going to tackle the numerous challenges in the country. Speak on issues and take the government on his weak side. If the government is doing good say it to show how truthful you are. In short tell us what you want to do and how you will do it, this is what can help you and not what you are doing now
When will JDM speak like a Statesman?
No Ghanaian will stop them ,you and your hawks should stop them greedy politicians
