Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Member of Parliament for Suame, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has disclosed that a bill has been laid before parliament about the ban on importation of accident and overage cars.
According to him, a decision has not been taken yet by parliament but discussions on the bill will commence soon in parliament about the ban.
Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia program, he explained that there have been rising concerns about the importation of these cars which somehow contribute to accidents in the country.
"There’s a global concern about the Co2 emission from vehicles especially the overage ones which scientifically are contributing to global warming. So all these issues will come up in the discussion in parliament, so I cannot say that a ban has been placed yet," the Suame MP stated.
Currently, overaged vehicles are allowed into the country after the payment of penalty but Government is considering a complete ban on the importation of vehicles which are 10 years old and also prevent the importation of salvaged vehicles. (Salvage vehicles are those that have been involved in an accident or vehicles that are flooded).
German car-maker, Volkswagen, Nissan, and Toyota are various vehicle manufacturing companies that have plans to set up assembling plants in Ghana to serve the Ghanaian market and other countries.
In a related development, the Automobile Dealers Union Ghana has welcomed the decision.
Speaking on the same platform, Prez of the group, Eric Boateng, explained that they will support the government's decision to ban the overage and accident cars because they contribute to most road accidents in the country.
"In as much as we understand how beneficial these cars are to some Ghanaians, we are concerned about their safety," he added.

Mr Minister and member of parliament suame constituency I would like to ask you what were you exporting to and importing from Nigeria before you became member of parliament, remember the roads you have traveled
Our leaders thinking inside the box again. They lost touch of the reality on the ground because of their position and huge income. Those so called overage cars are far better than the old car that were imported when they were under age but after so many year they are still in system. Here is the point: Make overage car importation legal and affordable and a lot of smoking old cars in the system will be thrown away and you will have no smoking car on the road
Dont we have a law banning the importation of cars that are over 10 years???. for the accident cars i am in 100% support to ban it.
If this is a joke, the majority leader should stop! Salvage causes accident on our roads? who conducted that research? Do you know the number of Ghanaian youth who get employ in this sector? Please, if this is a joke please stop because it will not work. Over age cars, yes but salvage cars, do not go there.
NONESENSE!!!
Are you telling me that Aboboyaa or the tri-cycles are better than savaged Toyota,Honda,or Lexus vehicle?
Ghanaian parliamentarians are fun and lazy as well. What research institution came out with the findings that salvage tittle cars cause accidents. The American Insurance systems work very good thus any little accident they salvage the car in order to get a new one. The car might not need any engine repairs at all, just the body works yet they can salvage it. Whoever is making that proposal and those of you going to vote on it should about ordinarily Ghanaian and stop thinking about what you will get from those multinational car companies.
What research informed the conclusion that salvaged vehicles cause the most accident?
Mr Majority Leader, pause and think about how many people will be able to afford a sticker price of $17000 for a brand new toyota corrolla? With Salvage cars, car ownership has become very affordable to the ordinary Ghanaian. Your claim of salvage vehicles causing accident is not only a lie but a big deception. We know the powers pushing you to pass such a bill are coming from these multinational car companies who just want to take advantage of our economy, reap benefits and repatriate their profit at the end of the year to their home countries. Pls pause and think about the ordinary Ghanaian. You are about the collapse a whole industry (importers, clearing agents, auto body shops, sprayers and mechanics) in addition to raising the cost of car ownership for the people of Ghana to the advantage of multinational auto companies.
Who told this guy cars with salvage tittles are unsafe. Accident in Ghana are caused by bad roads reckless driving Salvaged vehicles are even imported to Europe from the US
