The Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council (NPC), Mr George Amoh, has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure that nearly all eligible Ghanaians register for the elections.
With barely six months to the elections, Mr Amoh said building consensus and finding an amicable solution to any differences regarding the voter registration exercise was crucial.
Voter register
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Amoh said no Ghanaian should be disenfranchised in the forthcoming elections.
“It is important that we ensure that every Ghanaian is given the opportunity to register and participate in the 2020 elections. Nobody should be disenfranchised due to someone’s error or inaction,” he said.
In the event that the National Identification Card and passport were to be used as the only form of identification, Mr Amoh said it was imperative that the National Identification Authority (NIA) ensured that eligible Ghanaians had access to the cards before the voter registration exercise.
He said he was aware that some Ghanaians had registered for the Ghana Card but were yet to take possession of them.
Consensus
Mr Amoh appealed to the EC and other political parties to revive the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to help build consensus on the country’s electoral issues.
He said the IPAC had been and would continue to be a source of consensus building among all the political actors, including the EC.
He also advised the EC to open up to all its partners although it (EC) had the final say in the ultimate decision process.
Political actors
Mr Amoh, however, appealed to political actors to respect the mandate of the EC in the country’s electoral management process.
He mentioned that although political parties and other bodies might not agree with the work of the EC, it was important that the constitutional body was given the needed respect.
“You may not agree with its work, but let us respect it as the body mandated by the Constitution to manage our electoral system,” he stated.
Mr Amoh said inasmuch as the Constitution had empowered the Executive, the Legislature, Judiciary and other bodies with certain functions or roles, Ghanaians must learn to accept these roles even if they disagreed with some of the work or decisions of such bodies.
He reiterated the need for all the stakeholders to respect and support the EC to deliver on its mandate for a successful 2020 elections.

IF THE OLD REGISTER IS FAULTY AND WE NEED TO CHANGE IT WHY SHOULD WE ADD THE OLD REGISTER TO THE NEW. WE MUST START AFRESH.
THE EC WILL NOT GO TO THE HOMES TO BEG PEOPLE TO REGISTER. THE EC OFFICIALS WOULD SET UP THEIR EQUIPMENT AT THE ASSIGNED LOCATIONS. IT IS UP TO THE PEOPLE TO COME OUT TO REGISTER. IT IS ONLY IN GHANA THAT WE BLAME THE EC, NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION AUTHORITY AND THE GOVERNMENT WHEN PEOPLE FAIL TO FULFILL THEIR CIVIC OBLIGATION TO OBTAIN THE RIGHT DOCUMENTATION FOR THEIR CLAIM OF THEIR TRUE IDENTITY. IF IT IS TRUE THAT EVEN FOREIGNERS GO BEYOND THE ORDINARY TO GET REGISTERED, HOW MUCH MORE SHOULD CITIZENS FAIL TO USE THE ORDINARY MEANS TO GET REGISTERED. IT IS TIME TO STOP BEGGING PEOPLE TO GET FOR THEMSELVES WHAT THEY CAN DO. STOP THE BLAME GAME AND STOP BEING VICTIM TO EVERYTHING.YOU WILL NEVER GROW. STOP FISHING FOR PEOPLE. HELP THEM TO FISH FOR THEMSELVES SO THAT THEY CAN PROGRESS. THERE ARE RULES REGARDING EVERY REGISTRATIONS. QUALIFIED PERSONS MUST MAKE EFFORT TO MEET THE DEMANDS. THE POLITICIANS WOULD NOT SAY IT, BUT THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS THAT, A PERSON WHO IS NOT CAPABLE TO FULFILL THE BASIC REQUIREMENT TO BE REGISTERED IS NOT FIT TO MAKE A DECISION THAT AFFECT OTHERS. PERIOD.
What are these Peace Council people are saying at all? No one is against the New Voters Register. What they are saying is to add the old voters ID to register. So this common sense too we can"t understand it?
