The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is targeting a first-round presidential victory with a clear majority in Parliament in the December 7, 2020, general election, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said.
Addressing a durbar of chiefs and the people of both Berekum East and Berekum West constituencies at Domfete during his recent tour of the Bono Region, he appealed to the electorate not only to vote for him but also vote for the party’s parliamentary candidates to make it easier for him to push his agenda through Parliament for implementation.
He used the occasion to also introduce Mr. Nelson Kyeremeh and Mr. Kwaku Agyenim-Boateng as the party’s parliamentary candidates for Berekum East and West constituencies respectively
Skirt and blouse
President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians who were routing for him for four more years to continue his numerous policies and programmes to avoid voting in a ‘skirt and blouse’ pattern since that would not help him to achieve what he intended to do if he was elected for the second term.
“I need people I can work with when I am elected for the second term. Since I cannot do it alone, there is the need for you to ensure that I have a strong majority to assist me in Parliament,” he said.
He said that Ghanaians were witnesses to the fact that his administration had been able to fulfil almost all the promises he made while campaigning for the presidency in 2016.
“It is because of this that I now have the courage to appear before you to ask for another mandate,” he said, adding that “there is the need for you to vote in one way, it is the elephant for the presidency and an elephant majority in Parliament.”
Peaceful election
President Akufo-Addo appealed to Ghanaians to avoid violence during the general election “since it is important for us to elect our leaders in peace”.
He also advised Ghanaians to shun politicians who would also want to use violence to unduly achieve what they were not destined for.
“We need to allow the voters to exercise their franchise freely since they need to do so from their own freewill,” he said.
Statistics
The NPP currently has 11 seats out of the 12 in the Bono Region and the party is hoping to maintain its dominance during the election in December 2020.
During the 2016 general election, when the erstwhile Brong Ahafo Region has not been divided into three regions, President Akufo-Addo obtained 531,147 votes (53.87 per cent) while former President John Dramani Mahama had 442,789 votes representing 44.91 per cent.

Mahama and some of the left leaning politicians still believe that the npp is Ashanti, Eastern and to some extent Brong Ahafo based party. The npp is becoming more popular in the western North region even before the creation of the region. Check the mps that the npp hasi n the western North, something which was unthinkable in the Rawlings's era. Who thought that npp can earn 40% in the then northern region and 36% in the upper regions. Anytime Rawlings spearhead the ndc's campaign the ndc party wins more than 35% in Ashanti region and wins the election in Ghana. The npp is increasingly little by little in the Volta Region. The creation of the Oti region which respected person like Obed Asamoah has campagned for has been done and it can be a game changer. The president has soo many positive for him going into the election. Listen to the Kwasi Pratts attentively one can conclude that he is trying against the npp government but he as an astute politician he knows Mahama has got a herculean task ahead of him.
Don't waste your time in the Bono and Ahafo regions. Npp is always strong there. It is the Bono East that the ndc has overwhelming majority. If the npp can increase its share of votes like how it is performing in the North Western Region then npp can stay in power for a long time.
Mr. president, 1st round victory is yours, considering the work you've done since assuming office. abolishing/reduction of nuisance taxes, 1D1F, 1V1D, Ministry of Zongo & inner city dev, planting for food and jobs, NABCO, restoration of nursing & teacher training allowances, numerous infrastructural projects, free SHS which has allowed many poor families in my village to send their children to school; something they never dreamt about. We are gratful.
