Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said that if steps are not taken quickly by African leaders to right the wrongs in the society, the era of military takeovers may return.
He stated that factors that build fertile grounds for coup d’états are emerging in most African countries, a situation he said, must be dealt with immediately in order to sustain the democracies of these countries.
Unwarranted thirst for third term, corruptions, joblessness, poverty, manipulation of constitution, profligacy of the ruling elite and impunity are what give rise to military takeovers.
He was commenting on the response by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the coup d’états that occurred in Guinea on Sunday September 5.
ECOWAS in a communique on Sunday condemned “with the greatest firmness this coup attempt on Sunday, September 5, 2021.”
“ECOWAS demands respect for the physical integrity of the President of the Republic, the Professor Alpha Condé and his immediate and unconditional release as well as that of all the personalities arrested.
“It also demands the return to constitutional order on pain of sanctions. ECOWAS reaffirms its disapproval of any unconstitutional political change.
“She asks the defense and security forces to remain in a posture. Republican and expresses its solidarity with the Guinean people and Government,” the communique signed by ECWAS Chair, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said.
Soldiers appeared on national TV in Guinea claiming to have dissolved the government of President Alpha Condé.
However, the defence ministry said the attempted takeover had been thwarted by the presidential guard.
This follows hours of heavy gunfire near the presidential palace in the capital, Conakry.
Commenting on this in a tweet, Mr Ablakwa said “The disturbing development s in Guinea which comes after a similar undesirable military interventions in Mali, Chad, Sudan must remind African leaders that the coup era of the 1960s and 80s may sadly returned if the unwarranted thirst for third term, corruptions, joblessness, poverty manipulation of constitution, profligacy of the ruling elite and naked impunity are not curbed.

“Instead of waiting late in the day to hearten sanctions on failed democracies and cub regional blocs such as AU, ECOWAS, SADC and EAC should be boldly proactive in calling out their peers on the wrong track and demanding good governance that meets the expectations of the masses, particularly African youth.”

AKOFU ADDO IS THE NEXT
If you're man try.
You won't have said this if NDC were in power. I think you are hungry. Selfish man
You have a point but since when did you realize this? Profligacy is when a fresh university graduate could afford to fly guests to and from his wedding venue without blinking an eye to see if people had jobs or not. An Elite is a person who could comfortably leave an amount of GHS25,000 in his car booth when he goes to wash his car at the washing bay. These conditions have lived with us for a long time including when you were a minister.
Have you Ablakwa worked either in the formal or informal institutions before? How come some years back when you took your car to the washing bay, a whooping 25,000 GHS was found missing or stolen at your car boot? Look at your dealings when you are in power and stop amassing wealth at the expense of the ordinary Ghanaian. One day, we all shall be judged by God and there we shall see what we did on earth. Let our welfare as citizens be your concern.
So you say eh? Okay, it will return to you by all means.
Okudzeto appears to have the masses as his focus and seeking their welfare. Sadly, when Mahama and Mills were in power, his utterances weren't like this and justified every wrong at the time including woyome. He is one who politics have made him who he is.
