Former President John Mahama says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo lack the political will to fight illegal mining activities (galamsey) in Ghana.
According to Mr Mahama, if President Akufo-Addo were in another jurisdiction he would have resigned over the failed galamsey fight because he put his Presidency on the line on the matter in 2017.
Speaking in a television interview with TV3 on Monday, Mr Mahama said members of the New Patriotic Party including District Chief Executives and other party executives were the persons engaged in the government's Community Mining programme devastating forest reserves, hence the President could not win the fight.
“If you go to the districts they talk about community mining. Community mining is the NPP executives and the DCEs who are doing the community mining," Mr Mahama said.
“So, they are the ones doing what they are doing, so how can you expect him to fight galamsey when his own people are the ones who are doing it.”
Resignation
It will be recalled that in 2017, President Akufo-Addo served notice that he was prepared to put his Presidency on the line in his quest to fight illegal mining.
He said many people had said he needed to proceed cautiously, since the people involved were the same people who had voted him into power, and that should he take such a decision against them, they would not vote for him in the next election.
Addressing a two-day workshop on galamsey for traditional leaders drawn from different parts of the country, the President had said: “I have said it in the Cabinet, and perhaps this is the first time I am making this public, that I am prepared to put my Presidency on the line on this matter.”
But Mr Mahama believes after such a pledge and given the state of affairs now in the fight against illegal mining, if President Akufo-Addo was in another jurisdiction, he would have simply resigned.
“Indeed, if we were in some other jurisdiction, he would have resigned by now. By his word, he put his presidency on the line, because now his own people have been found to be the ones engaged” in it.
"It makes very nice verbiage when you talk about it and express a will to do something, actions speak louder than words," he said.
He further accused the government of knowing the individuals behind illegal gold mining in the country.

Mahama and his people promised to allow galamsey people do their job when he wins. They even supported his campaign with pickups so what is he trying to say now? Am surprised Ghanaian journalists don’t confront our politicians with their past records but allow them to continue spewing ***barred word*** and liars.
So you Ghanaian want this J Mahama, the liar man to come back, never never Again, Mahama is the one who told Ghanaian Galamsey people that he will allow them to do galamsey when he comes to power 2020, and those people voted for him, go and check your campaign messages, and also Mahama thinks Ghanaians are forgetful people, so they will follow him again, NEEEEEEEVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR EVERRRRRRRR< Mr th-i-e-f. go away, the whole is hard now not only Ghana, for you to take advantage of it. Also leave President Akuffo Addo also, he had done much much better than you J Mahama.
Mahama, please give us a break! We are simply tired of you now. Your utterances are just annoying people.
What did you do about galamsay. You are a joker. Keep dreaming.
Hahahaaaa, don't only galamsey, he doesn't have any will to fight anything in Ghana. The fact is that the man doesn't come anywhere near where we thought him to be. Just pray that his remaining 2 years comes fast for him to go and leave us quietly. For now that's the only prayer for majority of Ghanaians. Even the flagstaff house, the man doesn't know what's happening inside much more Ghana. Just like football fans will blame a particular player for squandering scoring chances, people decided to field this vociferous supporter only for them to realize that he can't even kick the ball properly much more scoring a goal. This is the plight of mother Ghana today, am tempted to believe this man may turn out to be the worse president in Ghana's history. You ask whether he actually sat in a classroom to learn. Ghanaians used their own money to buy food only to realize the salt and pepper is too too much, what for do, just close your eyes and swallow.
this man need help ndc should help him, talking as if he eliminated the galamsay during his time he has no credibility
