The Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says former President John Mahama's proposal to introduce a 24-hour economy in Ghana if elected President of Ghana again is "not a well-thought out policy".
Addressing a milling crowd in Tamale on Monday during his tour of the North on Monday, Dr. Bawumia pooh-poohed the idea, arguing a 24-hour economy cannot be legislated by government and that many sectors of Ghana's economy, both public and private, are already operating 24 hours.
"I hear John Mahama has a new idea and he wants to run a 24 hour economy. I say where did he get this idea from? It is not a bright idea! A 24 hour economy cannot be legislated by government", Dr. Bawumia said.
"Today, there are many businesses that are already working for 24 hours. Hospitals are opened for 24 hours. You can buy electricity for 24 hours. Because of digitalisation, you can transfer money for 24 hours. There are many chop bars and restaurants that are opened for 24 hours", he accentuated.
Dr. Bawumia continued; "The police is working for 24 hours. The security services are working for 24 hours. So what is this 24 hour economy that you want to bring? Operating 24 hours is an issue for businesses. If you'll make more money opening 24 hours, there is no law preventing you."
"This is an idea John Mahama thinks he has brought. It is a bad idea. It is an idea that has not been well thought through."
While listing a number of policy initiatives he has introduced and spearheaded even as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia said Mahama, who has been both Vice President and President before, has no impactful and transformational policies.
"I want you to compare me and John Mahama. Who has the ideas to transform Ghana. The track record of John Mahama doesn't show innovative thinking.
"I have not yet become President but I as a Vice President, I have brought solutions to many of our problems," he said.
Dr. Bawumia further stated; "We did not have a unique identity so I championed the government's policy for the Ghanacard. Today we have 17 million people issued with tje Ghanacard. Today, because of my proposal, we have no guarantor for student loan if you have a Ghanacard. Today Ghana has a digital property address system because we had a problem of no functional address."
He also slammed Mr. Mahama saying "before you could not transfer money between one teleco to another. But today, because of mobile money interoperability, you can transfer money Vodafone to mtn, to airtle tigo. Before, you could not transfer money between a bank account and a mobile account. Today you can do that. Today, you can renew the National Health Insurance on your mobile phone".
Touting the achievements of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, the Vice President emphasized that "today, you can sit at home and buy electricity credit on your mobile phone. Today we have brought zipline drones and they are delivering medicines to 2700 hospitals and clinics across the country...Today, we have one constituency, one ambulance. And another idea I brought is Agenda 111. We are building hospitals in districts without hospitals. Other ideas I brought are Zongo Development Fund and Gold for Oil policy. Today you can aquire drivers license and passport online. Today you can file your taxes online".

Retailing is the most popular and perhaps the easiest business in Ghana. Even our local banks are financing our retailers rather than supporting our farmers, small businesses, and start-ups. If the introduction of a 24-hour economy is to promote retail, we must be aware that we will be selling foreign goods as well as their rubbish, and this is evident in the goods we sell on our roadsides. But if we do it in such a way as to encourage and boost local production, then the 24-hour economy is worth trying. Otherwise, it will be seen as creating jobs elsewhere, outside our economy. I think it's time we made a conscious effort to promote local industry. So anything that encourages the importation of foreign goods without regulations and restrictions will not serve our interest in creating jobs. Having said that, I think that just making a policy of a 24-hour economy without any specific policy intention is often rather populist.
Chai Mahama is in trouble. Everything idea he will bring Bawumia will shred it. 😂😂😂. 24 hour economy is rubbish. It can not be enforced by government. Mahama think kakra an you are a human being

Mahama and NDC are vision less,it’s laughable Mahama says 24/7 activities are his new policy,a lot of the sectors operate 24/7.Eg. hospitals, mining companies, restaurants and hotels, some food businesses etc,…24/7 activities are optional,if you think it’ll help you no one prevents you from doing it so it’s poor thought. It’s obvious Mahama has nothing good for Ghana…I expect him to by now outdoors brilliant alternative solutions, developmental ideas, innovative and creative policies to lead/set the tone for 2024 elections but nothing is coming from him.The so called alternative is empty and scary!
NDC doesn’t think, seriously, productivity in the night is below 20% only heavy duty manufacturing firms run 24hr. And to add, they pay salaries on hourly basis. I seriously don’t know who is thinking for Mahama? He is backrupt of ideas
Exactly Operating a 24 hr economy is a matter of demand and supply issue and no government can issue caveat for businesses to work 24 hr when there is no demand for service.
