Flagbearer of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has described the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources as “useless” and plan to close it when elected as president.
According to him, the ministry has been ineffective to carry out its duties, leaving the capital and other parts of the counry to become more dirtier than before.
Speaking during a public lecture at the Wisconsin International University College in Accra, Mr Mahama said the Sanitation Ministry and others are causing the public purse for no work, hence, his plans to close them down when he becomes president.
“We will close down the Ministry of Sanitation, one to reduce expenditure and two, I don’t see any use. Accra, our country is dirtier than when there was no Ministry of Sanitation.
“Indeed, this country was cleaner when our country was under local government than as a stand-alone ministry and so we’ll close down that ministry and we’ll take the sanitation schedule back to local government, because we want to reduce government expenditure,” he said.
Addintg that, “It is not only the Sanitation Ministry, in Transport, Aviation and Railways, we are going to close them down and send them back to the Transport Ministry. We are going to combine Communications and Information again. So, we want to reduce the number of ministries.
“With cleanliness, we think that it’s the duty of the district assemblies. Every assembly has an obligation to make sure that its district is clean and so we must decentralize sanitation to the district level."

Then you will also end up closing down the Roads Ministry because we have very bad roads. This Mahama guy is very desperate and does not sense any longer.
This Mahama guy is annoying. How clean was Ghana when you were president? Sanitation Ministry is not Zoomlion. Just tell us a sensible policy you will pursue to better our lives and stop this infantile talk. You are not fit to be president.. Very trivial guy.
We'll all of you disagreeing with the statement or the author here, I hope you mean well for Ghana, if so, then you have no business supporting or voting for Bawumia, otherwise, you are just hypocritical, dirty politics driven nation wreckers, because Bawumia is more guilty than Mahama perhaps per what you guys are saying. Let's direct our energies and good intentions towards bringing a third force
Mahama think we have short memories,Aliu Mahama as VP championed issues of Sanitaion and discipline. You were VP,all that you did was to collect bribes from Aircraft companies,STX.You became President and did nothing about Sanitation.Someone at least saw the NEED for sanitation,so he created a ministry to deal with it,and you are talking as if you haven't occupy the presidency before.Bawumia as VP has/is championing so many time testing projects/initiaves to propel Ghana forward. It's only the insane who'll give you their votes.
In your tenure, even common cholera you couldn't control. What are you saying? If not in Ghana who could have voted for you again? Ghanaians don't have short memory. JDM yesterday is tye same JDM today
this is concert - plain and simple. we deserve better and some of us know better. no short memories mr. flagbearer. what did you do when you were a vice for 3 and a half years and what did you do when you became president for 4 and a half years. nothing to show in terms of sanitation. still no better policy statements!
Or make the ministry really work as it should, cut down on the size of government. If the good people of Ghana choose to elect you ( l HOPE FOR A REAL CHANGE, MAYBE ALAN) don't disappoint them.
'I have authorised the closure of this and that ' We have heard these severaly and nothing good came out of these directives. You can choose to close all other ministries who cares!
Why does John Mahama always as if he has never been a vice president or president of Ghana before? He says "I will. I will" but my question to him is what did he do about sanitation when he was vice president and also when he became the president? He wants to trick the igornant ones into thinking that he has never been either a vice president or president. Ghana needs a visionary leader and the person that is well-positioned to take the country to the next-level is Dr. Bawumia.
@kofi, political junkies, don't you see sense in what Mahama is saying? Forget about about your political parties. All those ministries , that Nana Addo just created them for jobs for the boys without thinking about their cost to the nation. In the end, they also become channels for massive corruption (referring to the Cecilia Dapaah's case)
