Nana Akomea has responded to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) opposition to the renaming of the Ameri Power Plant.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will on Wednesday, 17th April, 2024 commission the power plant to address the energy crisis.
The plant is to improve power supply to Kumasi and its environs.
With the plant stationed in Kumasi, the government has renamed it “Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant” but this has received a backlash from the NDC.
To the NDC, the name change is to discredit their leader and former President, John Dramani Mahama, under whose regime the Ameri plant’s deal was finalized.
“But let it be known that when Dumsor was collapsing the businesses of inhabitants of the Ashanti Region and beyond, it was John Mahama’s Ameri Power plant (howsoever it is called) that was brought in to save the situation.
"This affirms the widely held view by many that indeed President Mahama took bold and decisive steps to solve Dumsor and even eight years after leaving office, it is his interventions that continue to sustain the energy sector”, they argued, adding “need we say that the Akufo Addo/Bawumia govt, having borrowed so much with very little to show is seeking to rebrand and take credit for most of the projects initiated by the visionary John Mahama just to create a false sense of performance”.
But the STC Chief Executive, Nana Akomea has described these arguments as “childish talk”.
“Saying if we name it Kumasi, it means we don’t want us (Ghanaians) to know it’s John Mahama’s plant is childish talk. They should stop making these utterances,” he replied.
He detailed that the renaming of the Ameri Power Plant is for identification purposes just to “identify the one in Kumasi”.
Nana Akomea however established that in order to avoid arguments like those made by the NDC and also avoid conflicts over the naming of projects by any of the parties, NPP or NDC in the future, a rule must be set.
“As a general principle this naming of national institutions as far as possible should be done by consultation for consensus. When it is by consensus, then Parliament can pass an Act to establish the name to avoid any conflicts,” he stressed while speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show.

They can rename is "addo blood is holy", they will still lose. I CALL FOR A BLOODLESS COUP!!!
Infact NPP di3.r now we all can see. So what really is the se,n,s,e behind the renaming. I what is the benefit of the renaming? How will the renaming solve the power crisis? Infact I keep saying if NPP gets one more vote than their registered members in coming election I will now know Ghana our problem is God doing what he did to Israelites, "....because you allowed yourselves to be scammed by Bawufia in 2016 and made the mistake of voting for NPP even though they didn't win the 2024 General Elections, any individual apart from NPP Registered Members - - - - Numbers 14:34."
nana akomea, did we voted for nana addo to come and re-name and re-commission existing projects? look you gradually reducing yourself to be less sensible person because of politics, what is the need to waste money to re-name and re-commission existing project, iam sorry nana akomea lost his mind because of politics.
