The Ghanaian media was for a long time monopolized by the State media, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, (G.B.C), and Graphic Corporation, until the mid nineties when private media also gained entry into the industry.
Since then, there has been a great proliferation which has brought about a large number of media houses in the country, made up of both the electronic and print.
Under the electronic media, we have Radio, TV, and Internet services. The print media also constitute news paper houses, magazine houses, and printing press.
Other forms of media will include organizations such as those that provide short codes and platforms for media interactivity programs, Event Organizers, media consultants, advertisers and many others. A whole lot of the other forms of mass media are in existence. There are now over 200 radio stations, approximately 200 news papers, and about 25 TV stations in Ghana and still counting.
The kind of impact the media, the fourth estate of the realm, has had on our society cannot be overemphasized. It is obvious that the media has embarked on a lot of education, which has really enlightened people in all spheres of life, politically, socially, economically, religiously, culturally and even spiritually.
Reference can also be made to the fact that the media has helped grow myriads of industries in Ghana and has also celebrated role models, achievers, and history makers, serving as a source of inspiration
for many.
There is therefore no doubt, that we ought to celebrate the media in a grand style. An excellent way to do this, is to embark on the 1st Ever Ghana Media Festival (MEDIAFEST) with the theme; celebrating the media, towards peace.
