Sloopy Mike Gyamfi, one of Ghana’s top highlife musicians made history last weekend when he held a colourful ceremony to outdoor his two children born in Amsterdam with a Dutch female teacher, Judith Zwaan.

The event, which was held at the palace of the Anum Boso Omanhene in the Eastern Region, was attended by a large number of traditional rulers from the Central, Eastern and Brong Ahafo regions including people from the community who suspended their weekend farming and selling for the programme.

The children, Afua Efi Josephine, 23 and Jesse Kwabena Osei, 25, both post-graduate students in Communication Studies and Computer Technology programmes respectively were named under the lineage of the late Omanhene Nana Nyarko Yeboah II.

The former District Chief Executive (DCE) of Asuogyaman, Mr Kwame Ntow, who performed the naming ceremony, commended Sloopy Mike Gyamfi and his wife for coming to terms to have the children named according to Ghanaian traditions.

The Benkumhene of Gomoa Dabenyin, Barima Owusu Asare II, who was also accompanied by a large delegation of chiefs and drummers, described the event as a reminder to Ghanaians living in the Diasporas to project Ghanaian values.

The Benkumhene, who is also the CEO of FLYCOTEC Limited in Kasoa, continued that “children born from parents with different citizenship backgrounds stand to benefit when their identity is known through names. Such children are better placed not to feel alienated among their fellow white community or back home in Ghana.”

Sloopy Mike Gyamfi in an interview with the BEATWAVES said the naming ceremony was an action to help the children identify with their roots, get acquainted with their kinsmen and to build their lives, thereby, making informed choices.
