Music maestro, Kojo Antwi has explained that as much as Daddy Lumba is a great musician, he is not in his ‘class’.
According to him, his exploits as a musician puts him on a higher pedestal than Daddy Lumba.
Recently, there has been numerous debates on social media as to who is bigger between two of Ghana's biggest music acts; Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi.
While he notes that such comparisons are unnecessary, the music maestro believes that he has done more to put him above Daddy Lumba.
Speaking on the Weekend Warmer on Joy FM with DJ Black, the ‘Dadie Anoma’ hit singer said, “they should have had this debate ten years ago.”
He explained that, “Daddy is a great musician, he’s inspired me a lot, we were meant to be here at this time but for me I think, if you listen to what I do, the kind of shows I do and the rest.
"I think when it comes to comparison, I’m not saying Daddy Lumba doesn’t deserve to be there, but I think my target as being with the Angélique Kidjo, Salif Keita, Youssou N'Dour, [I am way up]. If you don’t achieve that, you will fall in between.”
Apart from the numerous Ghanaian awards, he has won two Kora Awards and he is the first Ghanaian to be nominated for the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards in 2010. With 22 albums to his credit, the musician and current Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), has been busy in the studio recording a new 14-track album. The album will be released during the first quarter of 2017.
One of the songs Ghanaian should expect from the new album is his collaboration with Dancehall act, Stonebwoy. “I spoke to Stonebwoy three days ago, there is a track called ‘Akyekyede3 Nante3’ and I believe he will do great on that.”
Like the story of Jonah, Kojo Antwi, who dropped the name Julius because of his believe for African names, couldn’t run away from the fact that he was born to do music. As a kid, he was fond of imitating some music greats including Nana Kwame Ampadu.
For his music inspiration, he revealed that he is inspired by “everything that happens around me” and interestingly, he hardly listens to his songs because “Every time I listen to the songs it’s like you will hear something you wished could have been done better.”
Kojo Antwi does not only sing, he can also play instruments like keyboard, guitar, drums and does the compositions himself. He, however, works with a team for the productions.
Asked why he doesn’t show his face on his album covers, the music maestro explained that he believes “Too much exposure can hurt your brand” and therefore does not use his image on his albums.
He urged entertainment personalities to control what they put out in the public domain.
When DJ Black sought to find out what his favourite song out of his impressive catalogue is, Kojo Antwi said “my best is yet to come”
The music maestro listens to a lot of Ghanaian artistes because “I hear a lot of me in a lot of the young ones. When I was coming up, I refused to be boxed,” he explained his desire to be unique.
He believes that “We need varieties, we have to allow them [current musicians] to be what they are.”

Name: Oye That is so condescending!! He could have avoided that statement. The 2 music makers have different styles and so he could have tactfully answered the question without sounding rude. Humility is a virtue!! OYe, I was about to comment on behalf of Kojo Antwi, but your comment is matured enough. thanks
live performance, stage craft, vocal deliveries, 24th night et all and so..... That what suit you to make your argument but somebody too see all this differently so what's your problem. Please let DL beeee wae, even though I will not take anything away from "Mr Music Man". How many musicians has he trained/inspired in the country. Talk of MRALL4REAL, and all. You cant even count the number of musicians who are trying to sing like DL.
please you wrote 10,000 word of gabage, you failed to mention one international award lumba has, aprt from ghanan borga's association of germany awards. All he is saying s if you are good let it show, not just making noise in Germany and Canada for the akurasi people.....masa kojo is mystro like Abedi pele
If u haven't followed the career of kojo then don't make this misguided and uneducated comments. It's ok if u don't agree with what he said, that's fine but don't spew this ..... I've worked with both lumba and kojo and I can confidently say kojo is in a league of his own. That is not to say, lumba isn't good. They both have strong attributes but when it comes to live performance, pls pls pls, lumba is no match for kojo. I'm not sure if you've ever been to any of kojo antwi's 24th shows before. If U have, u would see for yourself the level of stagecraft he puts in. Now on vocal deliveries, pls don't go there pls. U don't like kojo cos he's the ghramo boss cos this argument had nothing to do with royalty collections...
I want to start by saying that Kojo Anjtwi is not a maestro. Ghanaians have the tendency to use words which they hardly understand. A maestro is used to describe top-notch conductors, solo performers of incredible qualities, Choir Masters and Band Leaders. Kojo Antwi is none of these; in fact he doesnt come anywhere near a maestro!!! He is not even anywhere near Daddy Lumba because Lumba is a great composer, and innovator, who writes wonderful melodies and spends time getting the music arranged. He also sings better than Kojo Antwi. In fact Kojo Antwiu's music is not original. All he does is import existing melodies from outside Africa and adds Akan words to them; and the arrangements are very ordinary; his singing is nothing to write home about, also!!! Sadly, Kojo Antwi is living a lie if he dares compare himself to and puts himself in the same category as Salif Keita, Youssou Ndour etc. HE DOESNT KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. These African Stars are masters of their craft, sing original African material and are excellent musician/singers and they dont record cheap adaptations. They are so engrossed in their craft that they dont have time to indulge in matters such as royalty collection and union affairs; matters which should be left in the hands of professional unionists and royalty collectors. I know what Im talking about because I was, once, the Music Director of the Radio-Television Band of Cote d'Ivoire and I oversaw the beginnings of the careers of many Ivorian Artistes like Frederick Meiway, Alpha Blody, Nayanka Bell, Aicha Kone, etc. I know quality when I see one and can also tell mediocrity which is being hyped as quality!!!! Ghanaian musicians should concentrate on their music and stop unnecessary egoistic comparisons!!They should also leave union activity and royalty collection to professionals of these specialized fields!!!!!!
Ooh! Mr music man why?AAA are you sure you are better than DL?give us a break!!!
Very true. I have met a lot of Africans who knows next to nothing about our musicians and actors. They are all both local champions and DL is by far the best. Your level of popularity should let you know how good you are.
Both Kojo Antwi and Daddy Lumba are phenomenal musicians and I regard them both very highly. But in terms of standing,Daddy Lumba is better much. I laugh when Kojo Antwi and other people claim Kojo is an international artiste. Go to other countries and conduct a survey to see how many people know either Kojo Antwi or Daddy Lumba. You'll see that both men are unknown on the world stage. Sharing the same stage with Angelique Kidjo and Salif Keita in a concert does not make Kojo Antwi internationally renowned. So both Kojo Antwi and Daddy Lumba are local boys. Locally, Daddy Lumba stands tall. His hits are uncountable, compared to the handful by Kojo Antwi. Kojo released a song last year. How many people heard it? DL on the other hand releases hits after hits every year.
Mmmm,Kojo opinions are like noses. In fact u are good buh DL is BETTER.DL no size ,DL #1
The way people are bashing Kojo Antwi, don't be surprised that, these our journalist misquoted or reported wrongly what he might have said. I don't trust this our quack journalist and their bias reportage. We wait for Kojo Antwi's response.
