Former Ghana youth international goalkeeper Maxwell Banahene will return to the country on Wednesday and he is likely to sign for big-spenders Berekum Chelsea. The 26-year-old is making a return to the sport in Ghana after receiving treatment in England following a six-year lay-off. Banahene battled with the career-threatening knee injury in England with expensive treatment coast and lack of funds stalled his recovery process.
But when his ex-team-mate John Pantsil moved to English side West Ham United he took the expenses involved. Pantsil, who now plays for Fulham, also helped in paying for the goalkeepers post surgery physiotherapy which also aided Banahenes return. Banahene completed his final fitness test at English Premier League side Fulham two months ago and after several test matches he is ready for action.
I am heading to Ghana today and it seems that I will sign for Berekum Chelsea as we have been in talks, Banahene told Ghanasoccernet. They are a club who are serious about the future and I will be very happy to join them to make these things happen. Once I again I want to thank Pantsil for his extreme kindness towards me only God can reward him for what he has done in my life. Ghanaians and all the well-wishers have also been helpful with their prayers. I am grateful. Ghana here I come.
Banahene spent time with the Fulham's physiotherapist Tom Harvey Jackson who passed him fit. Bechem Chelsea claim they have almost reached an arrangement with the former national U-20 goalkeeper barring any unforeseen last minute hitches. Banahene won bronze with Ghana's Under-17 team at the 1999 Fifa World Cup in New Zealand.
