With Ghana’s opponents, Togo back home in Lome, Cabinda still gets set to host a match amid expected tight security following Friday’s deadly attack on the Togo team.
Ivory Coast will have their chance to open their African Nations Cup finals campaign today when they play Burkina Faso. But for Ghana, the scheduled second match in Cabinda on Monday against Togo remains in doubt.
The Black Stars have been left without an opponent after Togo departed the Cabinda enclave where two members of the Togo delegation were killed in an attack on their bus by a separatist movement and head back home. “The Ghana Football Association has not been notified that our intended opponents for the first group match, Togo will not honour the game," said Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi on Sunday.
The absence of Togo means that Ghana are now not scheduled to play until Friday when they meet Ivory Coast. “The match coordinator for our group came to see us this [Sunday] evening but said nothing about the situation. Caf has not informed us that Group B will be a three-team group yet.
“But when it comes to that, we would have to be ready. “Until Caf confirms that to us, we can’t look at the next game,” the President of the FA said.
