Ghana legend Abedi Pele has made an astonishing revelation that the 1992 Black Stars squad was not as strong as previously thought. The ex-Marseille playmaker says some players in the squad were talented which might have resulted in the thinking that the squad was great.
The three-time African Player of the Year award winner was the captain of the squad when they reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal.
The squad made up of top players Tony Yeboah, Emmanuel Armah, Prince Polley, Tony Baffoe and Frimpong Manso were beaten on penalties by Ivory Coast in the final. But they had seen off tough sides like Egypt, Zambia and Nigeria to reach the final but Abedi says the squad was not that great.
I think we had a strong team but not as strong as people really think it was, the Ghanaian soccer legend said. We had characters who really never wanted to lose, who were really mentally strong and who wanted to win everything. So that made us look very very good, the three times African Footballer of the Year acknowledged.
Many think that the 1992 squad was stronger than the 2006/2010 team that went to the World Cup in Germany and South Africa.
