Kwesi Appiah: ‘Only God Knows Who Will Be In Post Against Togo’

Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah has confessed that only God in heaven knows which of the three goalkeepers in camp will be in post for the national team when the Black Stars take on neighbouring Togo in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match day 2 fixture on Wednesday.

Spain based Razak Brimah and locally based Stephen Adams of Aduana Stars offer the only competition to Fatau Dauda in the absence of Denmark based, Adam Larsen Kwarasey who was temporarily dropped for his post World Cup comments.

“I wish we can have ten good goalkeepers that can bring a lot of competition. We have very good goalkeepers coming up, we still keeping an eye on everyone. As for the next game I don’t even know who will be the goalkeeper, only God knows,” Coach Appiah answered questions if he will drop Fatau Dauda who flopped badly against Uganda.

Fatau’s disastrous performance on Saturday has thrown wide open the competition for a starting role in post for the national team in their next game, barely four days later. The South Africa based goalkeeper conceded a first half stoppage time goal from Uganda when a carpet shot from just outside the area that appeared to lack any power shockingly beat him.

A blatant failure in the second half to stop another shot from an even more acute angle outside the box that crept under his huge body only for the post to save Ghanaian blushes, meant the jury went to town about the ineffectiveness of the Chippa United goalkeeper.

“I cannot say we have bad goalkeepers, we can’t be calling new goalkeepers every day. What if you bring a new keeper and he also commits a mistake, would you call another one again? We just make sure we correct the mistake they made before the next game,” Coach Appiah said in defence of Dauda.

“When it comes to goalkeepers, along the line he can make a mistake, but you look at the overall performance of the goalkeeper. I cannot say we have perfect hands, we all need to work together and support them to solve their problems,” the Black Stars tactician continued.

“We need to help by supporting what we have, we have to encourage them and make them believe they can improve,” Kwesi Appiah affirmed.
