A whistleblower in Iran has lifted the lid on a scandal, after claiming eight players of the female national team are not female, yet.
According to Mojtabi Sharifi, eight of the players on the team are undergoing a sex change, but have not yet completed the process.
“Eight players have been playing with Iran’s female team without completing sex change operations,” Mojtabi Sharifi, an official close to the Iranian football leaguesaid according to Iranian media.
This is not the first time the Iranian team has attracted this kind of controversy, as another incident occurred just last year were four of the players were also found to be men.
Somewhat astonishingly for such a strict Islamic nation, gender reassignment surgery is legal in Iran.
